What do I need to play Nids or GSC for 10th? oops ment 9th

I am coming back into the hobby. Life took me for a curve again. Finally getting better with my depression. Was thinking of restarting with a few game systems but found to expensive just for paper and no minis. So X-Wing edition 2 is out for me. Looking at Age of Sigmar, just too many books to buy. I was able to get a copy of the Indomitus set. (spelling?) So I do have the 10th edition rules.

I believe I have the 9th Nid codex. Can't find it at the moment. I know I don't have the 9th edition Genestealer Cult codex. How Ironic I was so excited for it, and THAT day, when I was going to buy the new codex, that is when my depression kicked in big time and I just didn't care anymore. I have lurked here on and off, but never commented much if at all sadly. So with the new edition out I was thinking I will try again and see if I want to play or not. If not, I will be collecting and painting finally, my miniature back log and new Nid/Cult minis that I haven't bought in the last few years or so.

I also have the 40K app on android and have the sub for now. So I take it I don't need to buy the new Cult codex and try and find my 9th edition Nid codex. While I don't have the fluff I still have the rules and points I need to play correct? If not what else do I need beside the 10th edition rule book and the 40K app? Want to make sure I don't need to buy more books when I can buy minis instead.

9th is the new edition. If you've got 10th edition stuff, I'd love to borrow your time machine!

The nids and GSC 8th edition codexes are still valid, and probably will be for much longer than anyone would like.

The Blood of Baal psychic awakening book has some good tyranid options in it. A lot of the psychic awakening stuff will still be valid, so keep an eye out for the ones with your factions in them.

You will need the core rules, which you have with the Indomitus set.

You will also need the, eh, fellas help me out, I cant recall the name of the book with the points releases, is it the 2020 munitoium book? With 9th there are a lot of points changes so you'll need this book or have good google-fu.

That's really all you need.

Like giga said, 8th ed codex for nids and gsc are still valid, there are some extra rules in the psychic awakening books blood of baal and the greater good (more stratagems and relics basically). 9th ed codexes for nids and GSC have not been released, and there is no info when they will drop. Space marines and necrons will be first in 9th with codex drops in october. You need updated points and faqs, you can get everything from the GW app with a subscription. Almost all books get outdated quite quickly with a bunch of FAQs, erratas and points changes so I don’t buy them anymore. If one goes looking, there might be a pdf hiding in some dark corner of the web, there is also the battlescribe app that gives you everything except stratagems.

There’s also the Warhammer 40K app. For 5 bucks a month it’s supposed to have everything you need to play, including the legacy 8th edition books. Most people here already have the books, so they’ve given the app poor reviews; but if you’re just getting back in it may be worth taking a look at.

Since you already have the sub, basically no more books required. Points are in it too and should be up to date.

Assuming it gives you access to all 8th Ed stuff, you will want to look at

As our two Psychic Awakening book. Baal for Nids and TGG for GSC. Most of the Nids book is pretty decent and really gave fair options to both factions. TGG needed GSC for page filler, and we got a handful of things out of it that aren't too bad but not particularly stellar.

What WILL be an issue are the type of lists that are considered competitive vs what you had in collection. The style of scoring in 9th Ed is completely different from 8th Ed and this will impact your game enjoyment the most from anything else.

To play 10th edition you probably need some HQ, some troop choises, 10th edition rules and codexes. For both armies. We do not know yet though.
