Is there something here? Did anything change regarding the timing of the strat? Most notably, do we know whether we go first or not, when we pop this strat? The wording hasn't changed since the old FAQ:
Page 119 – Stratagems, Sporefield, rules text
Change the first sentence to read:
‘Use this Stratagem after both armies have deployed but before
the first battle round begins.’
As I recall the above wording means that we do know if we go first or second when we use the strat.
9th ed is like this:
4. DEPLOY FORCES
5. DETERMINE FIRST TURN
The players should roll off again, and the winner can choose to take
the first or second turn.
6. RESOLVE PRE-BATTLE RULES
Players should now resolve any pre-battle rules their army has
(if any).
7. BEGIN THE BATTLE
So it would look like you pop this strat at stage 6. But not much else has changed to make this strat looks good. It's still 3CP and whatever points you pay for the Spore Mines (10ppm), for a 50% chance of going first. If you go second your weapon will be used against you - the spores stand there 12" between you and enemy lines, likely to get soften up by shooting, and the few remainders can be charged by chaff that can pile in and consolidate to block you in your deployment zone.
Is there any upside here apart from Spore Mines didn't go up in points?
