Before COVID and before Tank Aces, just after BoB, I created the Behemoth Super Tyrant, which is a Flying Hive Tyrant with Sythes of Tyran, a gun, murderous size and Unstoppable Hunger buff which turned him into a deadly beatstick that could engage whatever he wanted on turn 1.
He fell out of style for me when my opponents could kill him too reliably on turn 1. Tank Commanders gained the ability to double move and shoot their cannon with flat 3 damage and that pretty much made it impossible to keep the Tyrant on the board on turn 1.
Well now comes obscured terrain. It's going to be much more difficult for someone to get an angle on him on the first turn. And with the other changes to 9th, I think we're going to see more vehicles. So it's time to revive him and try him out.
Behemoth Battalion
- Broodlord w/ Resonance Barb, Warlord, Unstoppable Hunger 125
- Flyrant w/ MST (Scythes of Tyran relic), TwinDevourers, Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs, Murderous Size, Catalyst, Psychic Scream 245
- Swarmlord Catalyst, Onslaught 270
- 18 Genestealers 270
- 18 Genestealers 270
- 10 Hormagaunts 60
- 10 Hormagaunts 60
- 10 Hormagaunts 60
Kronos Patrol -2 cp
- Neurothrope Symbiostorm 95
- 3 Rippers 36
- 3 Rippers 36
- 6 Hive Guard w/ Enhanced Resistance 300
- Exocrine 170
total: 1997 pts and 10 cp
At it's core, this is basically our 8th edition staples but fewer models. I want to play something familiar in 9th edition, and see how it does in the new meta before making a drastic shift in tactics. My opponents may be familiar with it but their own lists may be drastically different and wont have the same answers. Genestealers are certainly a much bigger liability now with their increased cost, but their speed and utility (especially with Behemoth's power of +1 to wound) is hard to replace. Small units of Hormagaunts, with metabolic overdrive, should be able to snipe objectives from my opponent. All scoring is done at the start of each player's turn, so if I can get a unit of 9 to 10 ob sec on an objective to deny my opponent a 2nd hold, that could be a major swing in points. One could do this with termagants as well, but without kraken I think I'll need the extra movement from Hormagaunts to reach the objectives.
Despite having fewer models to work with, there's still threat overload in the form of Super-Flyrant, Swarmlord, 2 units of Genestealers, Hive Guard and Exocrine.
My local shop is hosting a 9th edition tournament this Saturday. We will have a chance to build our lists before the event (after seeing the official books to confirm our points are right). So I'm looking forward to trying this out.
