point change expectations

First of all I want to make sure that everyone knows this is just a prediction, I am not basing this on rumors or inside information or something.

Okay so we don't know about the point changes coming up expect that we must expect mostly points going up. We do know the changes in marine points and a few other things (like cultists going from 4 to 6)

I will not go over all the units we have but a few we mostly see on the battlefield can be looked at.



First up : Hive Guard
I wanted to start with these because I am expecting (sadly) a big point increase in these models. As we know thunderfire cannons went up about 60% and whirlwind went up about 50%, seems like WG wants to limit the amount of no LOS shooting. So I wouldnt be surprised if hive guard would also go up about 40-50% in points. (yes the thunderfire cannon was really undercosted, but the whirlwind was not a very op unit)

(flying) hive tyrants
This one is pretty uncertain as the point increases for marine HQ are all over the place, the new rules will have upsided and downsides for one of my favorite models but if we go with the average HQ increase I would say they will go up around 10%-15% depending on loadout

Genestealers
Another one that I fear will see a significant increase. if you look at the marines which went up from 12 to 15 points, I am afraid they would never let genestealers be the points they were. I predict a point increase of 3 or 4 points here because we can't have nice things. 

hormagaunts,termagants
it is hard to figure out why they made cultist 2 point more expensive (to be fair you rarely see basic marines and they also went up 3 points) so I am expecting 1 horm/2 term points increase for these guys. setting them both at 6 p.p.m.

last but not least : ripper swarms
another tough call, I think they are well priced on 11 point and they don't need an increase. I dont think anything in the marine codex can be compared to this kind of unit. but if I have to make a prediction I think they will go up to 13 p.p.m. 




so what do you guys think. Am I totally wrong? are you thinking the same thing? are there other units you think that will be hit hard or maybe finally get the love they need?

I think it will once again depend on the Primaris offenders. If a Tyrannofex with Rupture is only 150 but those Eradicators are 120 we will be right back to NPC.

GW wants to sell Primaris, and looking at the Necron rules so far they will do just that. The matchups they did made this painfully clear.

Love me some 40k but less optimistic going into 9th than 8th. 8th was the "everything viable" edition which ended up in "everything Astartes viable" by the end. Iron Hands much?

If gants go up they really have no idea how to price Nids. They don't actually kill anything. Less so than Cultists and especially guardsmen. 6 points is a lot for a just stand there model.

What would make sense balance-wise and what is likely to happen are two entirely different things. Considering everything else gets more expensive, the current relative powerlevel, and the (negative) impact of the rules changes, I would assume that termagants go up to 5 while hormagaunts stay at 5. If they do go up to 6, which is entirely possible, that would be extremely stupid and unnecessary. They do not even benefit from the one potentially horde-friendly change of the rules, which is the morale phase.

Genestealers also get hit significantly by the core rules changes, but were one of our best units, so they will probably go up by 1 or 2 points regardless. 3 if the folks making the balance changes are wearing pants on their heads.

For any model that costs more than 20 ppm, I would expect a 10% point cost increase. To what degree they are going to deviate from this to make the worse units and weapons good (or to make the good units worse), we will have to see.

If guants stay the same I think they will be good for their cost, I dont want to pay much for bullet catchers. If they get the chaos cultist treatment they will stay dropped from my lists, Neophyte hybrids are much better imo for the pnts.

I'm kinda dreading an increase in points for GSC. Neophytes, Acolytes all going up 2-3 points would be brutal.

I don't think gaunts, acolytes and the rest staying at current points is a safe bet, fellas.

We can see that Hand Flamers went up for marines. There is no way GSC hand flamers are still 1 point.

So if you loved those flamer bomb squads.. probably paying another 80 points for the full 20.

I am hoping that Tyranids are largely left unchanged or have point reductions on bigger things that never really saw play or often considered useless (Toxicrene, Maleceptor, Haruspex, Harpy, Hive Crone, Tervigon, Lictors, etc).

I ultimately expect our staple tournament units to increase somewhat. Genestealers, Hive Tyrants, Hive Guard, Neurothrope, possibly the Exocrine.

Well, considering that the GSC list in the Tabletop Tactics was using 9th edition points values and it was around 1750 points in 8th, GSC might not see huge increases. It's just 14% overall, and I imagine a decent amount of those increases are going to go towards Ridge Runners and Goliaths.

And curiously, no flamer bomb, so they might have been nerfed to oblivion. It wasn't very good anyway, but it's a bummer to lose options.

Another tester somewhere (IIRC) said hand flamers are back up to 6ppm. basically invalidating them as a mainstay chaff eliminator.

I find this highly doubtfull. It is in no way worth that for s3 flamer.

Considering we dont know how any of the new editions weapons or wargear works, we probably shouldnt invalidate such things, considering SS got a rework other weapons could as well
