Went to a 1500 RTT with my son yesterday. I went 1-2. So.... Didn't help the Tyranid win ratio cause any, but I had fun.
Game 1: I lost 16-28 against 3 Knights and guard. I held tough for 4 turns: it was only a one point difference, but he ran away with it on turns 5 and 6.
Game 2: Beat Astra Militarum Catachan 23-19. He had me really up against the ropes on turn 1. He killed over half my army and had Swarmy down to 3 wounds. (He actually asked me at the end of the turn if this was my first tournament and if I was new to the game. ) I used rapid regeneration to boost him back up to his second tier and was able to advance forward to slingshot my stealers forward into his lines. I killed his screen and touched 2 tank commanders. Next turn I touched 3 tanks and wrapped one and spent the last 3 turns holding on to the points to win the game.
Game 3: Got destroyed by by Ultramarines 9-28 on planet bowling ball. It was over on turn 1. It had the 2 L shaped tall walls in the middle of the table but effectively no other functional terrain. SM shooting is so strong I had no chance. Worst ass kicking I've had in a tournament in years.
My list was lack luster. I had play tested a couple of shooting lists that I thought decent but then I realized that I couldn't outshoot any army that gun lined and so I decided to play a different game. I played a battalion and an outrider. Outrider was 3 large units of Kraken gargoyles and a Neurothrope. Battatlion was Swarmlord, Broodlord, 2 units of 20 stealers, a unit of rippers, and a T-cyte. I knew that a T-cyte and gargoyles are subpar but they look striking and I was hoping that might give me a shot for best painted. I won best painted! It was based on player votes.
For best painted I won a life size 3-D printed power axe (picture below). All in all a great day. I had time with my son (who no longer lives at home), hung out with friends, threw some dice, and got a neat prize. Still a pretty successful hobby day. This is what it is all about. Saw some terrible sportmanship (the first player that beat me kept whining about his dice so bad all day that I finally said "Quit your (please do not swear) man, you won the (please do not swear) game!" He didn't. He made it to the top table where my clubmate beat him and he threw his pencil across the room and actually said "Bad game!" No joke.) Get out there, play some games and have fun. This is a hobby and there is more to life than your W-L ratio.
