The New Battleforce boxset for a new player

Hi there , new 'Nid player here wanting to know if the new battle force box set is worth it for a new player who's never really touched Wh40k.

Now hear me out , I know its not the best box set as ive heard gargoyles arent great and there's an awkward number of gaunts but in my country (South Africa) we're limited to what troops we can buy for nids. We cant buy Carnifexs on their own (only in boxsets such as this one) and we dont have acess to the dakka beauty that is the exocrine. Most of the local hobby shops only sell 40k products that have come out since 8th edition so basically most people will be running new power creep units. Some people might tell me nids arent worth it with limited unit choices but Im in love with nids and they really push me to get into the hobby. Plus I will pick up another army in the future thats more competitive but I want nids as a base army because they're so unique and cool and one of the things that apparently keeps people continuing the hobby is the passion for their army.

If you're keen to get in as a collector and painter, the box set is great. 2 of the battleforces and 1 Start Collecting gives you a very strong base to work with. It's also a good mix of different MCs and critters to paint.

Agreed, its a very good starting set. One alone gives you a very nice foundation to work from; two a very solid core to a tyranid force.
It's a shame your local retailers don't stock more, but surely can't they do orders for you with their next shipment to get things like the Exocine? Many stores (not even most GW stores) carry the whole range of the game. It's a huge list of things (well over 1000 products to stock); so many gamers are used to buying off the shelf and also asking to order specific things through the shop.

The local store does have an online store however it is quite limiting due to the fact that we dont have a lot of 40K players in general, plus I think its safer for them to buy new products because it keeps the existing player base spending . It could potentially be possible to order things such as an exocrine but Im sure they're going to charge a premium making the model far too expensive.Because you see the beauty with the hobby in my country is we pay considerably less for models then nearly every other country , for example instead of this battle force box costing me $185 I will probably pay $130-140 and maybe even 10% off extra to pre-order it (the flip side of having a weak currency)

Well models from GW are broken into two blocks. There's models stores can order at a discount to retail value and then there's "direct order" models where stores can't make as much of a saving over local GW prices. That said if your store is ordering through the normal GW channels then products they get should come at either of those prices local to you. It shouldn't really cost a premium because it would just come with the normal shipment the store gets. Best to ask them really, there's no point denying yourself models if all you have to do is ask for them (and some3rd party stores don't always maintain their online store fully - esp when they run dozens of different product lines and might not be aware of all the content of each one).
