Onslaught not allowing you to make use of the double tap makes sense, and I never thought that it would. However...
Allow me to quote the wording of Onslaught:
"That unit can shoot this turn (even if it Advanced) without suffering any penalties to its hit rolls for moving and shooting Heavy weapons, or Advancing and shooting Assault weapons."
The rule literally and explicitly says that the unit can shoot even if it advanced. Assault weapons can already do that, so it must refer to other weapon types. In the Tyranids ranged arsenal, ~90% of weapons are Assault, a single one is Pistol, the remaining ones are Heavy. There is no clause specifically excluding Heavy weapons either. So the only possible interpretation is that this power allows the affected unit to shoot its Heavy weapons after advancing.
The only other possible way to read the first sentence I can possibly think of would be that Onslaught allows the target unit to ignore the to-hit penalty of Heavy Weapons, and, in the event that some other ability allows the unit to shoot its heavy weapon after advancing, even in those cases the to-hit penalty is ignored. But I cannot currently think of another tyranid power or ability that would allow a model to shoot its Heavy weapon after advancing. So that would make the rule bit in parentheses obsolete.
The "FAQ" does not clarify how the rule works, it literally contradicts it...
I sent an e-mail to the feedback address asking what is up with this contradiction. I do not expect to get a response, but we will see.
I can see where the confusion comes in - they should have separated it into 2 sentences. For me, the highlighted words towards the end of the line made it quite clear:
"That unit can shoot this turn (even if it Advanced) without suffering any penalties to its hit rolls for moving and shooting Heavy weapons, or Advancing and shooting Assault weapons."
- Moving and shooting Heavy Weapons
- Advancing and shooting Assault Weapons
...it doesn't mention "You can fire Heavy weapons even if you advanced" - it simply states you don't suffer any negative to hit penalties for those weapons within the space of their usual rules.
