Any tips for a beginner Nid painter?

I have been playing nids for about six months, but have only painted a few of them, what I find when I paint them is that they look like (please do not swear). I think this is because I always really on agrax and nuln oil to tie together my minis, but I can't do that with nids (more specifically leviathon). Because of this they always look unfinished, even though I have completed them. Are there any tips for somebody who's just started painting nids (or any lightly coloured race for that matter) before?

What color scheme are you going for? If you normally use agrax earth shade and nuln oil, you can still use it. Just use a custom color scheme. I can see earth tones working well. Maybe go with a light brown skin and a dirty orange carapace?

Wait a week and buy the new constrast paints. Should save a ton of time when cranking out the gribblies.

I'm using the default Leviathon colour scheme (boring I know, but I like the feel of it). Is and I'm using carraborg to fill in the crevices, are there any washes that would tie everything together but still keep the look of leviathon? (it jsut doesn't seem like nuln or agrax oil is suitable for it)

I already do that, it just seems like everything is faded, it just doesn't feel vibrant enough. Almost too white? thats why I want to find a wash that would work with leviathon.

Probably not. The issue you'll have is that the wash will make everything look dirty. If you do want to use the wash, I'd recommend relighting with white. Here's the official gw video on how to paint leviathan.

Don't use white as your base coat.

Painting nids is just like painting any other army. It's just base coat, wash, drybrush. The problem is that when you use white you can't drybrush because nothing is brighter than white. You also blow out a lot of the details that would normally be brought out with highlighting.

One thing you can try is using an off white as your base coat. Try using your Bleached Bone (or whatever the new GW bone color is) in place of white on a test gaunt and see if it comes out better.

I used screaming skull as my basecoat and it turned out really well, dry brush turns out much better, thanks for the advice .

If the screaming skull isn’t white enough for you, Reaper Miniatures makes a color called linen white. It’s a very good off-white color. Most people can’t tell the difference unless you put it next to pure white.
