What are the biggest problems of The Grey Knights?

A friend of mine finally folded and decided to play 40k and loves GK. I told him they were not in the best competitive spot and he was OK with it. I can't in all good conscience play a Strong List against him unless he has some chance of winning. So my question is what do they struggle most with in a Match up vs Nids? That way I can, atleast for now, stay away from Units that'd make a Game One-sided in Nids Favor.

Aldo of you could List some of the GK units to stay away from when playing GK that'd be great. Any help in what makes them weak and how to shore up those weaknesses to atleast make games fair would be appreciated. He is starting so allies are out of the question for now as he is unable to spend in another army.

I think the big part is because when you think GKs, you think of an army of Termies, which are expensive, slow, and too few where even just a few casualties is huge. Maybe the CA changes plus the beta Bolter rule will make things different.

Not sure what you're asking for units YOU want to stay away from. Do you mean so they can do their thing unimpeded? Because a Dreadknights (especially grandmasters) and Paladins can be mean.

GK suffer primarily 2 things :

Elite, with low model count, due to price

No proper anti-tank.

Other than this they have a reasonable codex with enough basic rules and gimmicks to make them playable, and enjoyable.

They will work OK against anything not a cutthroat list. My friend took a GK list to a small RTT size thing and came back with all victories, while my Ynnari came back with 1 1 1, so it's really about the ski of the player.

Grey knights have +1 to deny and lots of units that can use that ability, so they can counter armies that rely on psychic phases shenanigans pretty easily. Also those units have lots of baby smites so they can chew thru other low model count elite armies pretty good too (watched a battle report recently where they neutered and beat T-sons pretty good).

If your friends wants a simple overview of the GK units, send em to 1D4chan. It isn't a bad read for reference. Also, make sure he looks at the CA for up to date points, because holy (please do not swear) a lot of stuff went down. When HQ and other characters go down 40-60 points each, that can get you a whole extra squad.

Overall, my impression is that Nids and Daemons are their best pairups. They do well against monsters but not against vehicles. With the new bolter rule they also do well against hordes.

They also do well against psykers.

That is basically a list of what Nids and Daemons do best. Monsters, hordes, and psykers.

Aside from taking it easy on the new guy, I don't think you will have to tailor fair matchups much at all. If anything, once he starts getting good, you may have a real challenge on your hand.

DK Grand masters are good. Most other things are adequate to decent. I haven't played them much in 8th so I'm not sure if they have any real stinkers in the dex.

Thank you all! Your input has been really good. The First game is set for Next Month. He is absurdly hyped for it and I really hope he wins. I won't pull punches much but will make sure he has fun.

Did the price for the Strike Squad go (significantly) up at some point? I bought one way back when Grey Knights were in their glory days, but I do not recall paying that much.
