Making a Red Terror from spare parts

Since buying warhammer models leaves you with tons of leftover bits, I decided to put mine to use and make a conversion for what I consider the currently ugliest model in the Tyranid range. Took me a while, largely due to spending forever carving texture into the hardened modelling putty, but I think the result looks pretty good.

The main parts I used were the tail of a Flyrant from the tyrant kit, the torso and head of a Tyranid Prime and two scytals from the warrior kit, as well as the medium mawloc-talons, the trygon prime tongue, and some extra spikey bits, from the trygon kit.

Thoughts?

Right now I am thinking about how to paint the little fella. Since it is the Red Terror, I feel it would be appropriate to modify the color scheme from my regular one. So the question then becomes... do I make the skin red? Do I just mix some red into the brown so it looks redder? Do I paint some parts of the model red, like the head or the torso, or maybe the tail? I would like to hear some thoughts on this, haha.

I'd say make the weapons red (like leviathans weapons) or add red dots on the skin or carapace.

I like the color scheme btw. How did you do the wings?

Or paint it as normal then add Blood for the blood god Technical paint all over. Because in lore it wear enemy’s blood to fear the enemy. Aka The Red Terror.

I used a metal ravener (got about 15) with warrior scything talons, Toxothrope lashes and genestealer rending claws. My color scheme is similar to behemoth. The Red Terror got red streaks instead of the blue ones. It's fine for me

Theres a really awesome one using part of a carnifex on the tale of painters blog... would love to do something myself. I do have a spare tail from the SC box that I made my swarmlord out of... will have to see what other parts I can come up with.

Yeah, I have seen that multiple times before. It is pretty badass, but it is also a lot larger than the regular Red Terror model, and, more importantly, uses up mandatory parts of several other kits, including the actual Red Terror model!

If your flyrant tail is from the start collecting box, you are going to have one warrior torso+head left over, either a regular one, or the prime one. that is what I used for the torso of mine. However, since I wanted it to be bulkier, instead of glueing the front and back halves together, I cut off a stick of sprue frame and glued the torso halves to opposite sides of it. That enlarged the chest by 2~3 centimeters and gave me a solid frame to fill up and mould the in-between areas with greenstuff. I guess you could make it even thicker, but eventually it will probably look silly when the chest becomes notably thicker than it is broad.

(Also, the crotch-plates I used on my model are actually trimmed down versions of the tail-tip of the tyranid prime, which you would also have as a leftover bit if you assembled your SC-box warriors as regular warriors)

That’s actually a really good idea. Got a picture of how it turned out? As you say the tale of painters one uses a lot of key model parts so for me it’s not really economical - I need to keep building a few more of the bulk ornate my army to build up the spare parts box to find some other useful parts but I think the warrior & flyrant tail (or part of it) Is where I was heading most likely.
