Question for my Ignorance

So being North of the Wall in the isolated wastelands of Canada, I've come to enjoy the 8th edition competitive scene. Not being in it obviously just watching.

That being said, I am curious about something. How has just about every tournament had an illegal list or someone cheating?

Is there no list submission prior to them? Does no one check? This seems like something that can be avoided. We will usually check each other's lists before a game, mistakes happen. (It also removes the "oh it's a combi-*needed*"

Second: Cheating irkz me in every format of game. It's already brain fluff, do you need to boost your plastic soldier ego that much? Now with people being caught and banned, is this the right course of action?


Again, I'm ignorant. Help me learn.

several hundred lists submitted. a handful of judges, volunteers, with no standard for training or knowledge base. no armybuilder. you want to check what? yeaaah, good luck with that.

the best solution that's been put forward is to submit the lists ahead of time and have them posted online and let the internet pick them apart because god knows, if you're wrong on the internet someone will (please do not swear) tell you.

The core issue as I see it is that the competitive scene for Warhammer is very bare-bones in many ways, which is compounded by the fact that the game is complex on multiple levels and isn't aided by the fact that each edition changes things up; that legacy models are still legal in some way (so its not just check the codex its check the codex and compare it to the index unless you ban index listings for armies with a current edition codex) and its not helped by how GW word and writes their rules (whilst many of the rules are simple they can sometimes be written in a way where they can be interpreted differently or the information isn't where you think it is).



I think if Warhammer wants to make its competitive scene "serious" then its got to get on board with merchandising and sponsoring and generating more profit; so that there is more money in the system to help give reason for people to train and learn the rules in depth and to work as judges/organisers at events. To pay for cameras to record games; to have more staff on hand to oversee each game or at least one per pair of games on tables next to each other etc...

Army lists is another example; its not a "vast" amount of work, but it is if there's only a handful of people doing the event in their spare time.

yeah i don't mean 3rd party apps. building an army is a pain in the ass. GW needs to stop (please do not swear) around and roll out an official app, with (please do not swear) points.

Agreed. Then all lists could be automatically checked for accuracy.

Out of curiosity, how do tournaments deal with people using rigged dice?

GW really needs to make an official army builder. I'm sure they will overcharge for it, but boy would it help. It would need exportable/importable lists, apps for tracking a battle in progress, etc.

I don't know why they haven't already done this. When the fan community seems perfectly capable of doing it it looks bad when their like one attempt so far was completely lacking

If I remember right (and I could easily be wrong), I think they were thinking about an app with points about a year after the Combat Roster came out (it went live on April 30). Since the app thing was originally mentioned (in passing) when 8th came out, I'm not optimistic for it to show up during this calendar year (maybe 4th Quarter).

From the Community in April:
"If you’re looking to build lists with points, worry not – the upcoming Warhammer 40,000 app will feature a points-based list tool. Stay tuned to Warhammer Community for further announcements."

I suspect we'll get about a month's notice like the lead time we got for Combat Roster.

I really liked Army Builder in previous editions, but I'll take what I can get (be it GW or AB).

Maybe they're waiting for the Codex release cycle to complete, so they don't have to edit it as much...?
