What do I need to get started in necromunda?

If I were to pick up the Escher collection and gang war 1&2, would that be enough to play? Or is getting the starter set and pawning goliath off on someone a better idea?

You'll also need a Rulebook which they do not sell. Honestly you'd be better off buying the box and selling the goliath off. I do not know why they won't sell the rules separately, even looking online for a less scrupulous set of rules you'll be hard pressed. And from playing it seems you'll need all the gang war books as they constantly add more rules/weapons and change points. So far the Necromunda books have been more like paying for patches in a (please do not swear) game that you still paid full price for. So... pretty standard GW practices.

There's a reddit thread here where a user puts together the rules from all the books into a nice, single transcript. It's far easier to read.

If you plan on being able to play the 2D style game, you pretty much need to pick up the boxed set. Gang war 1 includes campaign rules, 3d rules (called sector mechanicus), 6 missions, and the lists for Escher and Goliath. Gang war 2 includes some updates to skills and the lists for Orlock and some campaign stuff like hangers on. Gang war 3 adds Van Saar lists, updated equipment lists for Escher, Orlock, and Goliath, a huge updated trading post, and tons of new missions.

There are also some white dwarf missions and gangs out there, but they are included in the pdf linked above.

Ultimately I would recommend someone in your group to pick up the starter set for the 2d terrain, the rulebook, and the tokens and dice and stuff. It's nice to have. It also includes a base set of cards that can be expanded on later with the packs if you want to go that route.

Oh, one other tool you may or may not find useful is YakTribe it's sort of a Necromunda hub where you can talk to other players, check out the forums, and keep track of your gang for campaigns. We're currently using it for our campaign and while admittedly the site layout is rather frustrating being able to keep track of your gang, money, reputation and skills from your phone is nice.

Thank you very much for your replies, that exactly encapsulates the information I was looking for. I thought about converting goliath into some aberrants but ill have to take a look at them closer to decide.
