Painting Black & Yellow (Hornet) Nids

Hello chaps and chapettes!

I have recently deserted the greater good and joined the hive mind picking up the Nid starter box with the Genestealers, Brood Lord and the Trygon. I was looking online for a colour scheme and fell in love with the black and yellow hornet Nids and decided to have a crack at it myself, I've been trying to find out who painted them and if theres any more photos preferably of Genestealers so I have an idea how the paint is done or Nids with more flesh and carapace. I was also looking for advice on working with yellow and how to get similar results in the pictures attached, I am thinking starting from a black basecoat and I heard brown was a good starting point. I am very worried about getting the skin tone right as it seems to be a very pale almost white yellow as opposed to the brighter yellow on the carapace.

HIve Fleet Vespa is a good example of how to pull off Yellow decently, idk if you want something similar to this but its a good starting point.

Looking at them in daylight I can say i failed on the yellow! I kinda like the colour but its not going to work for the scheme i'm going for. I think I know where I went wrong - I started with a base of two browns, Averland yellow then a brown wash. Then another Averland yellow.



Problem started with Yriel Yellow it kept turning black or dark brown, green and was almost a luminescent yellow so I decided to tone it down with more Averland yellow before giving it a dry brush of pale yellow. I should of dry brushed over the Yriel yellow rather than go back to Averland. so now I've got the biege to pale yellow going on.


I'm stuck thinking on how to rectify the situation without having to start from scratch. Any thoughts?

As a quick fix, you could try to cover the entire skin with a coat of Lamenters Yellow glaze maybe. That's the only thing I can think of that would not require manually repainting all the areas.

If I were to do a vibrant wasp-y yellow I would probably not go for a dark brown wash in the future but instead the yellow or orange one (unless you want the recesses to be dark to evoke a look similar to black stripes, I guess). Earthshade would be too strong.
I assume you would want to be able to do the skin without manually layering and applying highlights, so I would say something like...
1. Basecoat Averland sunset.
2. Wash with either Seraphim Sepia, Fuegan Orange, or Casandora Yellow.
3. Heavy drybrush with yriel yellow or flash gitz yellow.
4. Very light drybrush of a pale yellow to highlight some select details to stand out more, like the features of the face.

Another option would be to coat the entire skin in Yriel yellow, then apply only a recess shade of the shade of your choice, before doing a light drybrush with a pale yellow or bone color.

Thanks for the advice Iryan! A few people have suggested using Lamenters Yellow or Casandora as a fix to my current predicament ill give them ago and see what happens, if not ill strip the paint and start a fresh. Its a shame I like the colour I ended up with and pretty happy with the shading and layering I have dine but its just not what I want for this project! Also is my Chaos Black looking more dark grey to you?

I am not sure I can assess the blackness of your black properly unless I see a picture with different lighting; in the current one, the reflectiveness of the smooth surface makes it hard to tell, haha.
Although... you said "chaos black". I assume this means you just sprayed the mini but did not paint any black over it afterwards? If so, that might explain the issue. The spray can have a bit of an odd finish to it. Putting one thin coat of black paint over it should help. Possibly even a coat of black wash afterwards, but not sure about that, heh.

Also, I would advise you to try your paint scheme on something gaunt-sized before painting a full trygon. Much quicker to do any much less annoying if it does not come out the way you wanted.

Ill try and get another photo, the spray I used was pretty black but the Choas Black paint I put on the carapace to tidy it up seems to have a dark grey sheen to it may just be my lighting and the paint is pretty old.

Yeh I should known better but I got excited by the big guy and I was pretty confident that I could smash the colour haha. Ill try and pick up some glaze on the weekend and some new yellow and see how that comes out. Ill keep you posted

I have some experience in painting bright colors over dark colors (please pay no attention to the quality of my work specifically ).
1) Whether glossy or flat, I have found that when putting light colors over dark colors, it really helps to have the previous layer fully dry, or it mucks up the over-coat.
2) When putting a bright color (like you'll want for a hornet coloration), use graduations from a bone white to a skull white as a fully dried layer before adding your yellow to make them pop out the best. The yellow that has skull white (white scar) underneath will be the brightest in contrast to the black.

The alternative is get your prime white and then go with the yellow base, but getting the black detail over that can be tricky.
