One thing I've noticed while playing at a few different stores and with different people is there always certain 'types' of people, not just a power gamer while playing but in general things you might have caught yourself doing. Now this isn't always a good or bad thing but I thought it'd be interesting to see what sort of people everyone is here at the forum just for a bit of fun and maybe get a little better perspective on how people think, play and interact with those they play with.
So as for myself I am what I'd consider an "backseat strategist" When watching games I always find myself giving advice on where to move units, in what order to shoot, etc. Now problem is I pretty much always do it without being asked, but it just comes so naturally to me that I don't register I've been doing it until a few minutes later. Though to be fair nobody has ever told me off for doing it and most people take my advice in one form or another so at the end of the day it's not too bad. Just something I try to resist doing without being asked first.
Now sadly I wish I could be as analytical in my own games because I'm constantly forgetting to move units, use psychic powers, shoot, etc. Being in the moment is pretty distracting so I end up making more than a few mistakes while playing, some of them painfully obvious. But that's just how it is!
So what 'type' of person are you at your local club?

i'm the absent person. i live 20 miles away from either of the stores in my area that host games, i work on the weekends, and i can't stand the noise and chaos level of trying to get a game in on friday night. i much prefer to game at my house, where i can chug coffee all evening and get comfortable instead of hanging for another 4+ hours in my work clothes.
p.s. i'm old.

Neither can I tolerate standing around for evening waiting for a game. It's why I like tournaments: I show up and get 3+ games in a row and go home. Some guys just like to stand around and chit chat and throw the occassional dice. My life is too busy and time too precious for me to do that. killercroc: being a 'backseat strategist' is really frowned upon in my area. On the other hand, if somone is flat out playing a rule wrong and I see it, I'll call it out. Was watching a game this past weekend where another Tyranid player tried to bring back a 30 man devilguant squad in the middle of the table WITHOUT PAYING THE POINTS. He got pretty salty, but it would have swung the game and I wasn't about to let that slide. It has to be a table edge and you need to have the points reserved. Since I'm a greybeard I often get asked my opinion of rule: in that case I try to just state what the rule says without giving a hint. I HATE the number of players I see referring to their smart phone (battlescribe, or online) to reference a rule. Read the actual rule from the actual codex, it clears most of that junk up.

I don't even think you needed the p.s. at the end to say you're old, everything you wrote sounds like something an old person would say, do you also yell at kids to get off your lawn? Haha. Though I can respect not wanting to drive 20 miles just to get in a game, I'm lucky that I just live 2 streets over across a river from the LGS I go to, so the 3 minute at most drive is no bother... the parking downtown on the other hand (kill me now). But as long as you have a nice table and terrain and people want to visit and play that sounds pretty good! just switch coffee for coke or beer. killercroc: being a 'backseat strategist' is really frowned upon in my area. Yes I do understand how it can get annoying so I do try to prevent myself from doing it if I'm aware enough at the time. So it sounds like you're the walking rulebook then? Honestly it's the same for me, I've been playing Warhammer for less time than most of the people there but they always come to me for rules questions or to be an impartial on a split decision in if a rule means X or Y. And I'll do that too, point out if someone is doing something wrong, just last week had to tell the Guard player that Leman russ turrets only fire twice in their shooting phase, no for overwatch when the opponent charges. As for people using their smart phones and whatnot I agree, just look up the rulebook or the FAQ, honestly I don't care what some guy said online or on a Facebook article because that person didn't make the rule. Also, I dislike the people that refuse to get a physical book and keep a digital codex, it means you cannot pick up their book at any time and look at it, you have to trust they're reading the rule right, which sounds easy enough but you'd be surprised how many people screw up their own rules!

I'm rarely in FLGS but when I am I won't interrupt someone else's game and I am mostly curious to see which armies are playing and how they are painted. My one friend won't even consider going to play game in the store because he dislikes other people interrupting or even looking at us when we play. And yes, we are approaching grumpy old man age too, it's great.

Reserved and polite until I get to drop 100 rending attack dices on my opponent. That's when I laugh like a lunatic.

I'm a self-gagged 'backseat strategist'. I forcefully shut myself up while others play so as not to ruin their gameplay experience, at least most of the time. I've gotten much better at keeping my mouth shut and might have even cured myself if I also want the elected 'Librarian' and 'Impartial Outsider' used when 2 players cone across a head scratching moment or need a third opinion about a model's line-of-sight and what they can see. We've deemed the 8th's "shoot from and shot in any part of the model" rule stupid and primarily use the rulings from 7th as a house-rule. There's obvious exceptions or line-toeing calls, and that's what a outside eye is for, which I wind up being if I'm not a player. For rules, I'm usually asked about things from Core rules to Codex questions. Even when not at the game store, I've received text messages with questions. Codex questions, I've started telling them that it's their codex thus their responsibilities to know unit rules. Interactions, I'll still help with though.
So I'm a self-gagged Backseat Strategist, Impartial Judge, and resident Librarian (non-psychic kind). I'm trying to ween my group away from my being the Librarian by getting everyone into knowing the rules. The Backseat Strategist is my own demon to conquer and I don't much have a problem being an impartial judge on weird circumstances.

I'm not there enough nowadays but I always ended playing intro/learning games to try and recruit people.
Back in 5th ed when the nid codex was so simple, there were a few times when I was asked to add up the points on the sly for a particular guy's list to see if he was cheating (again).
I try and help my opponents by giving them the math hammer for their decisions before they make them. I let them take back certain actions too if they're really struggling.

I'm the quiet one who is constantly plotting my next move to the point where I don't even notice that I'm about to table a noob. I'm just pushing to optimize my turns so much that by the time I'm shooting their last unit off the table I am just barely noticing that they have nothing left and have a beat down look on their face.
I always feel bad about that and wish I paid more attention to how fun the battle is for my opponent, but when I am in the moment, I am focused on optimization.
I have a few friends who can give me a run for my money, but clubbing baby seals is just something that happens.
When I am an observer I make it a point to only speak in generalities and compliment good looking conversions and paint jobs. I'm not there to get into protracted debates about how competitive Necrons are or aren't in 8th ed. Especially when I am a Tyranid player talking to a Necron player.

To be totally honest, im not a casual player, i constantly reread the codex, trying to find neat little tricks and tactics to use to my advantage, however i dont go all out competitive either. I prefer a nice balanced list, something that is a decent match for most lists, but at the same time kind of fun to use as well. I normally spend most of my time at the store gaming or painting, though due to the small size of my nearest GW store, it can be hard to get more than one game in per day. So, i guess im sort of your average player, no really fluffy lists, but no overbearing cheese either.

Apex Predator. Stalking the tables at my local game shops. Calculating every players moves and their table habits. For when the Great Devourer descends there will be no remorse. XD

So, i guess im sort of your average player, no really fluffy lists, but no overbearing cheese either. Same here for the most part, really study my codex and the rules so I can build a solid list and use the rules to my advantage, but I don't build powerful min max lists. I still take gaunts, rippers and warriors in like every list but I have all the rules down so I can use them to my full advantage. Generally a balanced list is best if you don't know what you're up against, I mean if you know your opponent brings just tanks then bringing a lot of anti-tank is fine. A Small store could be a problem, ever look into doing a game club at someones house if they have the room? We have a big store to play at but sometimes home games still are a thing for one reason or another. I mean shoot there are lots of people in the area that buy the models but don't play at the store, but our group just added another 3 new people that moved in from outside the area which is nice. XD Hey, learning your preys behavior is a useful tactic!
