Hey all, life's been in the way and i havent been on this forum in a long time but I thought this would be the place for it. I've recently taken up writing and figured it might be good enough to use as a sample to see about writing for Black Library. The following is a sample from my first short story Delusions of Grandeur. Let me know what you think, if there is enough demand I might post more of it.
Part one
The void flashed with cosmic chaos; swirls and eddies of emotion never seen before and which would never be seen again. Tides of anger swallowed waves of grief who were in turn subsumed by oceans of chaotic emotion that would drive a man mad to look at them. This was the space between worlds, where reality became meaningless and impossibility was rent apart. Pure chaos, the realm of gods and monsters, home. The entity uncoiled itself from its feast on a dissolving mountain of fear and lazily stretched its consciousness. The taste of fear still lingered and it savored the remains of the sweet emotion. It liked fear; pure distilled fear was plentiful in the warp though often fiercely contested over amongst those of its own kind. It had gotten lucky this time, only a few smaller creatures were feeding on this formation of emotion when it appeared and frightened them away. It had feasted heavily on the remnants of the emotion but soon enough it would attract the attention of others and it would be dangerous to remain for too long.
A curious sensation gripped the entity and it watched the fear burst apart as something crashed through it. The delicious mountain of fear dissolved into shards and was quickly absorbed into other stronger emotions. The entity watched as the object continued to crash through the tides of unreality and saw it for what it was. An anathema, a shard of matter and order in the chaos of the entity’s home. The entity knew on an instinctual level that this meant prey and not the sustenance of raw emotion… real, visceral, prey to be consumed like the rare delicacy they are. The entity began to give chase to the anathema, following in the wake of broken nightmares that it left behind. The object was moving quickly and the entity need to be careful as it dodged and weaved through the jagged shards of chaos left in its wake, the object was running from or to something that much was certain. Within moments however the entity realized it wasn’t alone in its chase. A Shoal of lesser creatures surrounded the anathema trying to find a way in and feast on the souls inside.
The entity scattered their essence with ease and blanketed itself around it as it tried to find a way to pierce the layer of reality that was keeping it out. Frustrated the entity moved from mind to mind of the mortals inside the ship but could not gain a grasp on any of them. Much of the mortal vessel, for the entity realized that this is what the anathema was, appeared to be actively blocking him from accessing the minds of the inhabitants. After many attempts though the anathema found what it was looking for; a beacon of unreality nestled unnoticed in the mind of one of the mortals. The entity carefully folded itself inside its mortal host and watched the world through their eyes.
That was when the screaming began.....
