This weekend I finished up the wave of conversions I started when the codex release was on the horizon in the autumn, thought I'd post some pics.
First up was a subtle modification of a Tervigon. Now that T-fexes are seriously good and will actually be hitting the table I wanted to do something to differentiate a Tervigon body from a T-fex body. My one beef with the dual kit protocal GW has embraced is that the two builds of a kit often end up looking really similar, and I prefer a little more variation. Nothing complicated here -- I just clipped the dorsal vents of the Terv and then replaced its front legs with slightly-modified Flyrant legs to hopefully give the appearance of something that humbly shambles around barfing up Gaunts (compared to the standard legs of the T-fex which give it the mobility and angle-correction to find trajectories for long-range combat).
Second project was an attempt to use up the leftover body-parts from the kits I needed for the other conversions. I knew I was going to have most of a Maleceptor kit leftover, and since I didn't own a Maleceptor model yet but also didn't really like the standard design, I decided to bash together a large Zoanthrope/Maleceptor mutant combo thing. I'm not sure what to actually field this as... if the Maleceptor gets better I can do that, although this conversion is technically on the wrong base size. I can proxy it as a Neurothrope, but the same base-size issue comes up. The most effective role is probably as a Malanthrope proxy.
This involved parts from a bunch of kits: flyrant lower body, Maleceptor torso/head (with resculpting of the head plates and the addition of the Zoanthrope "pharaoh chin"), Mawloc arms, and misc Trygon bits to hold it together and disguise the attachment points between pieces that weren't designed to interlock neatly.
Third project was an upsized Old One Eye. Although I left both eyes intact, sooooo there's that. From what I recall, this conversion doesn't actually include any Carnifex bits, which is funny. It's a Toxicrene lower body + a Trygon torso + a T-fex head + modified Haruspex claws. If I could do this one over there are a couple of things I'd alter; I'd replace the vents on the Trygon body with bigger ones, and I'd be more careful with the tail (it has a bit of a kink in it at the base that I could have done more smoothly).
Humourously, I don't think my version of OOE would have a chance in hell of standing up straight for more than a second or two. I kind of enjoy the ridiculousness though. He's like a shark, he has to keep moving forward. And any time he wants to chill out he needs to "power down" and rest on his crushy claws.
Size comparison with a regular 'fex:
The final conversion is the one I'm most happy with. I impulse bought a third Tyrant kit in late October -- at the time most Tyranid kits were out of stock, so I couldn't find something locally I actually needed (ie. second Exocrine or second T-fex). Once I unpacked the Tyrant I figured I should do something special with it instead of just building it stock like my two preexisting Tyrants. Solution: make a huge Lictor. GW still hasn't given us great rules for the Lictor (which is my favourite-looking Tyranid) so I decided to repackage the look of the Lictor with the killy rules of a Tyrant.
Lots of bits and custom work on this. Most of the body is Tyrant kit, with vents clipped/armour plates modified/a thorn attached to match the look of the Lictor. The top set of arms are a mash-up of Flehborer Hives, Tervigon legs and Flyrant talons. The middle limbs are scytal arms + Toxicrene claws. The head is a Tyrant head with feeder tendrils made from tentaclids. I still need to do some greenstuff work on the join between the tendrils and the head, but its passable for now.
