Any Space Marine players able to give some advice?

Hi

I have a friend who has recently started getting into 40k, he got the 8th edition codex and we have played a few games now about 8-10 a couple 7th but mostly 8th.

He has a few Space Marine units, some from the battle for Macragge box set (That's what first got me into Nids and 40k) we got years ago and a few others he picked up over the years to paint but since he is learning still I let him proxy whatever he wants with either my GSC or my unpainted Nids whatever suits the proxy best.

The problem is that while i know my Tyranid well I pretty much know bugger all about Space Marines, while I have been back playing for a year or two after a very long break none of my regular opponents play them so I can't really help him with their nuances and synergies

I was hoping someone could suggest a good 1.5-2k point good all rounder list that could play decently against most teams but he will mainly be facing my Tyranid until he feels he has got the grasp on things and gets a few more models, or even a good core army that he can build around to give him some options.

Any help would be appreciated he wants to start collecting and painting soon but doesn't want to buy stuff yet until he knows whats good and what works well together

Edit* He likes Ultramarines since that's what he painted his Macragge units but any chapter is fine.

My current Ultramarines army. Might give you some ideas.

My salamanders really like 5 man tac squads with a lascannon.
Captains and lieutenants are nice HQs,not particularly strong on their own but they increase the reliability of your shooting which is important for Marines.
Hellblasters are great against most targets.
Also I usually try and stuff anything I can into a land raider, repulsor,rhino or razorback for the added mobility/protection for my expensive infantry/and to decrease how many drops i have.

Thanks a lot for the advice guys those lists will definitely help I'll pass them along.

As for just reading it I dont think I am good enough to just read over it and know the subtle differences between alot of their similar units and what would make a good core.

The vs thread is handy but not really a good resource for advice on building a space marine army.

1 Dreadnought

1 Land speeder

4 or 5 terminators

That should be all give or take a unit

Looks like almost everything he has are basic marines. I would buy a devastator squad and a tactical squad box. That would give him some heavy and special weapons to choose from.

A transport would be nice too, razorbacks are great dual-purpose weapon platforms.

Thanks for the responce, seems like transports are a really good choice for Space Marines and this is advice that is especially helpful since almost none of my reg opponents use them and they have generally sucked for us for a long time so I had no idea how effective they could be.

Transports are also amazing at soaking up overwatch. Much harder to drop out a T7 3+ than a T4 3+. Berserkers +Rhino= fun stuff
