GKs and Invulns

A friend of mine is collecting Grey Knights. He mentioned to our group that their librarians can take a stormshield and some wargear option (termie armor + staff of warding maybe?) or a strategem it can achieve a 2++ invuln. I don't know their rules and I am just trying to figure out if he's reading it correctly (I know with their FAQ Sanctuary is capped at a 3++).

The prospect of a character, other than a Dark Eldar Archon, with 2++ seems pretty ridiculous to me. I assume exorbitantly costly due to GKs. Anyway, could anyone confirm if this is possible? Any help is appreciated.

I was under the impression that all Invuln saves were capped at 3++. If that is not the case then it is possible. I went through this same discussion about the SS too. This is similar to take a SM Lib on a bike. It is no longer in the codex, but it is still in the index, which you allowed to use. You can use the index options/datasheets as long as you use the most recent publications point costs. In the GK index, you could take a Lib, using the SM datasheet. The SM Lib could take a SS, so a GK Lib could take one too. There was no restrictions to what a GK Lib could have.

Now this is where it gets tricky. Both SM and GK have updated codices now. So if you wanted a GK Lib with a SS you would have to use the GK datasheet from the index, which pointed you to the SM datasheet. But now you would have to pay the most up to date points which would come from the SM codex. It's a real mess. But that's how I'm going to play it and I'm in the middle of use Draigo's SS for a Lib model.

Eldrad has a 3++ and can be targeted with 'protect' by warlocks and spiritseers to get a 2++. There's no mention of any sort of cap anywhere in the book.

We have the new Balethorn Strangler in the new dex which ignores invulnerable saves, which is going to be absolutely devastating against eldar and daemons where they have 6+ armour without their ++.

So invulns can be better than a 3++ but GKs specifically cannot do better when in combo with sanctuary.

Awesome thank you both! The prospect of a 2+ and a 2++ with potential re-rolls (~97.2% chance of ignoring things) is pretty ridiculous imo. At least on Eldar they're only T3 which fleshborers wound on 3s.

Balethorn cannon rightfully scares harlequins, and little daemons alike.

Remember also you can smite and soon psychic scream straight through invulnerable saves.

Plus biovores, mawlocs, etc.

Yep nids are lucky with all the potential MWs. I actually grabbed a few spore mines recently for that option. Other factions aren't quite as lucky. Dark Eldar for example, without certain coven models, reavers, and mandrakes have very few sources. Though I guess MWs aren't everything though.

I don’t think stormshields are an option anymore with the release of the Grey Knight codex. I’m pretty sure they come standard with a 5++ and then have a nemesis warding stave, which improves the existing invul by 1.

Man we are really going to give lists that rely on psyers such a hard time.
A hive tyrant with wings, this relic,Kronos warlord trait is going to wreak havoc on a brimstone/malefic Lord/Magnus list.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I mostly play fairly casual games so I really look forward to testing the different hive fleets.

I finally glanced in my friend's codex. No stormshield, but he could take an index librarian. Alternatively he could cast sanctuary, terminator armor, and the stave. All of these are over 150 points (172 I think for index w/ SS and 159 for the basic wargear if I can still do math). He wants to run these in his "casual" 500 point games.

Oh well I'm sure it will all workout in the end. Thanks again!
