Ok so this is kinda more bloggy, but I don't want to put it in a blog because then I won't care about it (that and I'd have to market it for ages to get any feedback or even chatter so - better a forum with active nids in it!)
So I've been start-stop restarting my nids for ages - which mostly translates to a box here and there and dust on sprues. So this year - 2017 - I'm making it my mission to get my nids back into action properly! So I need a plan of attack in order to get this all off the ground and get things moving but also to upgrade what I've got already so that there's a general standard (I'm plagued by being a perfectionist without the skill to be perfect).
So I'm hoping you guys can pitch in and help out with advice, comments and general "Overread get freaking on with it already" comments .
So my plan of attack is as follows:
1) Starting with the smallest, the gaunts first and foremost as that's the most labour intensive area and the most numeric.
a) Purchase a Swarm Box and two "starting tyranids" sets to give me an almost instant base swarm of gaunts. Building them into standard termagaunts (no devourers or spinefists). The big difference here is being able to easily remove the mould lines from the gaunts (something I never did with my first gaunts).
b) Clean and assemble the gaunts + gargoyles of the swarm box.
c) Alongside this use my existing gaunts to start working out a paint scheme and freaking practice painting darn it! I'm not actually sure what scheme to use right now so might be a bit of playing around; but the primary goal is to get my painting up to a decent level on those older gaunts.
d) Paint the swarm box gaunts + gargs.
That's phase 1 which essentially replaces all my gaunts with a fresh wave of ordered, well made and painted for the table top gaunts. It will also give me a first ever wave of gargoyles.
2) With Phase 1 completed (or at the VERY least assembled, undercoated and painting practice well underway) part two will be assembling the warriors from the starter kits, plus a couple that I've got in storage that never saw use. These will be magnetic ones on the arms so will take a bit longer; but again it gives me a clean selection of warriors that I can vary to suit the situation (and codex changes!)
3) With painting well under way it will be time to clear house and start selling/trading off the older models. Starting with gaunts; but chances are I'll also start moving onto others as well. Whilst its a pain to rebuy (and something I never really wanted to do before which is why I never sold out before) I want to achieve a certain standard that I'm pleased with. So if I can turn a little profit to re-invest or trade for some options then I will do so.
That said whilst I can use the Hive for this the only things I'll be after in trades are metal pyrovores if anyone has them (yes I know rules wise they are hated and loathed but I love the models - and GW is sluggishly slow at giving us a vore combined model).
4) From warriors to tyrants - two winged with magnetic weapons. I'm tempted to consider magnetizing the base as well, though I've not seen the content of the plastic kit to know how easy this is. If its possible then magnets out; if not then I'll still do the wings with magnets just to allow me easier transporting.
5) Hopefully by this stage the gaunts should be all painted up so it will be a case of moving up to painting the warriors. I'll likely keep one or two old ones around to practice on again before moving on to the main warriors.
At this stage I'll stop planning anything formally. I'll still have a fex from the swarm box, plus another I've got in storage. In addition it starts to get to a stage where adding things is going to be big models; so loan projects in their own right with magnet weapons and more involved painting.
I want to have phase one well underway this week; so if it gets to Wednesday and Thursday and there's no painting update from me pester me - bug me! With a bit of a push and support from you guys I can really get this going!
