I need 15 metamorphs with claws in a hurry, and apparently the whole australasian region is pretty much out of metamorph/acolyte kits until mid-January. However I did pick up a couple of extra copies of Deathwatch: Overkill in a boxing day sale, and like any tyranid player I have scads of old genestealer bits sitting around.
So time to do a bit of kitbashing.
Here is the acolyte I'm starting with.
Equipped with an autopistol... fine
A rending claw... ok.
A close combat weapon... nope.
I need a limb for the claw, so that CC weapon has got to go.
Next I need to make the claw. I'm not too attached to the traditional crushing claw appearance, and figure that any pincy looking thing should do.
So I'll start with one of the dozens of genestealer scything talons I have sitting around. Snipping it off at the wrist, and removing that little tendon.
Now I need an opposing claw to make it appropriately pincy. First thing I found in my bits box was one of these little claws that I think come with the trygon kit.
Any claw of about this size should do, but the trygon kit comes with lots of spares, so I'll use it.
Gluing all this stuff together gives me my first problem. That pose doesn't work too well.
Easily fixed though. Just a matter of swapping the autopistol with the claw.
Next up is the head. I did manage to get my hands on one metamorph/acolyte kit, and it's a great box for spare bits. Coming with over 20 heads.
Unfortunately, only 7 of those heads are for metamorphs, so I'm going to need to make a few more.
I was planning on using the special heads from regular genestealers, however they're a bit too large.
They're quite a bit longer and wider. They could fit if I built up the neck a little with greenstuff. But heads that big would make the metamorphs look kinda goofy.
So it seems the easiest approach is to add some stuff to acolyte heads. These fleshhook ones are probably the easiest to convert. So I'll start here.
Don't want to glue on the fleshhook with such a tiny bit of surface to hold it on, so I'll drill out the cultists mouth.
Then whittle down the fleshhook.
And that should do it. My first metamorph.
