For those who haven't seen it yet, the most recent video from Painting Buddha (part 12 of their Korgos Khul series) is a how-to on creating recessed bases.

Pretty spiffy stuff, IMO. The idea of cutting into a standard base to make room for recessed detail seemed so bloody obvious, once I saw someone else do it...
