My shrike conversion solution

Gentlemen, I'm building some shrikes for my combat based army. But I'm having trouble getting hold of the preferred vargheist wings. So I've thought up a solution.

I'm working on a conversion using the oop Ravener body and gargoyle wings. The small wings are enlarged by the slender body of the Ravener whist remaining large enough to resemble a warrior.

Due to their week toughness and armour saves, I'll only be kitting them with rending claws and talons.

Let me know what you like this idea

That idea works wonders, especially if you can model a few of them on modified flying stands, you could have them "leaping"

I was tempted to do a few shrikes as well, that's why I bought a battered box of gargoyles to cannibalise, when looking at it I realised 1 set of wings just won't look right (too big for such small wings) HOWEVER if you really insist on making shrikes I would recommend "2 sets" (4 wings) in the formation of a dragonfly, so one set under the other, while I didn't actually made the model (realised the gargoyles would complete my skyblight formation) the idea really struck me, so if you make them like this please let me know, would love to see how it turns out

I used old metal gargoyle wings on genestealers as shrikes. It fits well.

Raveners would be awsome.
I am still bumed FW discontinued the wings

I have the the cheapest shrikes out there and I dont get any complaints so the ones you are talking about sound fine.

I'm hoping that GW will make a big deal of shrikes in our new codex, with new models, shrike prime and return of the parasite of mortex. I'm glad shrikes haven't had the chop yet...

I'm a big fan of the forgeworld wings thanks to eBay.

However I realy like your idea Irondreadknight. The old ravenours are small enough for the gargwings for sure, full speed ahead with your conversion!

Forge World makes wings so they were safe. Same with sky slashers.

Wings are no longer listed as wargear/biomorphs for them, either. They are just warriors that are jump infantry with a different armor save At this point.

I do wish they'd move the remodeled FW wings along though. Be nice to have that updated.

So while I've been waiting to acquire the amount of Ravener bodies I'll need for the shrikes. I've tested a different method. That I'm unsure of, but I've had good reviews from friends.
I've chopped up gargoyles tails and wings and mixed them with genestealers bodies with warrior heads. Then given them the flying bases.
They look much larger than gargoyles now, but smaller than warriors. The stands do give them more height, so I think I've got away with it. They do look more like the parasite of mortrex though.
I'm still planning on doing my original idea for the shrikes. I wanted to test a cheaper alternative.

I simply use the leather Scourge Wings on my Warriors. They are a little bit larger than the gargoyle ones.

Here is my shrike. I used 2 Gargoyle-wings and the Gargoyle-Tail.

A box of Warriors and a Box of gargoyles will end in 3 shrikes and 1-3 Warriors, if you got a lot of bits over.

nstead of posting on a new thread I though I'd post my version of the shrikes here, they are not yet painted, but I think you get the idea. all I did was create the warriors as I would normally, then add one pair of wings, originally I thought I may need to double it, but as you can see, I think it looks effective on its own

       

never thought i'd make a set of shrikes, as I never liked warriors, and the armours of shrikes are worse, however the fact the are a fast attack synapse makes them highly effective at maintaining order amongst the broods, while also gaining the DS ability should you need it.
