Hiya people, just dropping by with a short story pitting my Hive Fleet against the might of my friend's newly formed Chapter, the Swords of the Emperor. And yes, I know the name of the story sucks and that it's very cheesy. I couldn't think of any better
Anyway, I hope you will enjoy this little story^^
The Cold of Death
Codicier Aiexus surveyed the battlefield. Across the inhospitable fields of Korvex, all the Librarian could see was a tide of red and green. It reached all the way from the lines of the Marines, to the very horizon. Except from the crusting ice under his own armoured boots, he could not even see the snow. The tide of chittering aliens was drowning the world, paying little heed to the freezing temperature. It didn't seem to affect them at all, and it certainly didn't affect the Space Marines. The planet might be drowning in a tide of alien death, but the Swords of the Emperor stood like a rock in the midst of a treacherous ocean, weathering every wave of aliens with grim determination. Shrieking Hormagaunts hurled themselves forward with bounding leaps, their long talons eager to stab into the Space Marines. Masses of braying Termagaunts pressed forward, while larger Warrior creatures stomped forward, the smaller aliens parting before them or being crushed beneath clawed feet. And above the carnage on the ground, the sky was black with flapping Gargoyles, a dark carpet raining Fleshborer beetles and bioplasma down at the defenders of Mankind.
The snow in front of the Astartes lines was coloured purple with viscera, thousands of alien bodies sprawled like a carpet across the plain. As more and more Tyranids hurled themselves screeching forward, they were mercilessly cut down by the disciplined fire of the Swords. Squads of Tactical Marines were holding the trenches, every bullet from their bolters finding a mark in an alien body. They didn't even need to aim. They could fire blindly, and every bullet would still make a kill. Explosions blossomed like flowers amidst the aliens, as the thunder of Vindicators and Whirlwinds could barely be heard against the deafening screeching of the alien horde. Alien limbs and broken bodies rained down into the braying horde in the wake of each explosion. The openings where the artillery shells had struck were open for a moment, as pieces of dead Xenos rained down. Then the horde surged forward again, filling the holes again with the press of bodies. There seemed to be no end to them.
Aiexus shifted his weight slowly onto his right leg, the servos in his ancient Terminator armour humming as they powered the massive suit of adamantium. Turning his head in the same direction, he watched the line of the Swords stretching out to each side. They were holding the swarm back. But unlike the Space Marines, the Tyranids were numberless, and they hurled themselves eagerly against the guns, uncaring for their own pathetic lives. Aiexus, to his dismay, could see Space Marines falling, one by one. As he watched, a spore mine fell from the sky, ramming straight into Sergeant Korveus' Devastator Squad positioned on one of the bunkers behind the trenches. The heavy bolter-wielding Marines didn't notice the deadly balloon in time, and the sergeant didn't even have the time to yell as the mine detonated on his abdomen, transforming his armour and the man within into semi-liquid goo. His brothers yelled out their anger at the loss of their Sergeant, firing with fury into the horde, their heavy bolters spitting death into the ocean of aliens. Carapaces and alien bodies exploded under the onslaught, sending up shower of purple viscera. Aiexus could feel his anger boiling, as he stared at the patch up bubbling goo that was once the honourable sergeant. Jumping down from the bunker he was standing on, he fell five meters before landing in the middle of the horde, crushing a score of gaunts under his massive boots and sending cracks jagging through the hard-frozen ice. The horde was stunned for the fraction of a second, assessing his psychic presence, then with a deafening screech, it hurled itself forward, a wall of alien flesh throwing itself mindlessly towards the Librarian. Aiexus was ready, arcs of Warp-power flashing from his fingers and dancing over his form, seeming to slow time itself around him. Aiexus easily sidestepped the first shrieking gaunt, his force staff slicing cleanly through it. He seemed to move with a playful ease that belied his massive armour, as if the Tyranid beasts were moving in slow motion in comparison. More hormagaunts hurled themselves at him, trying to stab him with their long claws. Slashing in a wide arc with his staff, he beheaded three of the braying beasts, before punching his fist through the mouth of another. The alien bit down, trying in vain to bite through the ancient Terminator armour. Aiexus grinned and squeezed the trigger of his storm bolter, shredding the alien's insides to mush, before hurling the limp body to the side. These mindless aliens offered him no real challenge.
No sooner had the thought touched his mind, before Aiexus heard loud stomping behind him, and a bestial roar. Turning from the shredded hormagaunt, he could see a massive creature charging forward, crushing scores of gaunts under its massive clawed feet. It stood twice taller than even the massive form of Aiexus' Terminator armour, dwarfing him in comparison to the alien beast. By now, the remains of Korveus' Devastators had noticed the threat to their leader, and had opened fire with their heavy bolters. Explosive shells showered over the alien's carapace, but the rounds of heavy ammunition seemed to find no flesh to bury into. The Carnifex seemed to be armoured from top to toe, heavy plates of chitin bonding and fusing over its weak points. The Devastators were expert marksmen, able to find weak points in any Tyranid organism. But not this one. Every bullet just bounced off its armoured shell or exploded harmlessly against steel carapaces. Aiexus threw himself down, dodging the massive tusks jutting from the alien's jaws, and barely avoided being sliced in two by a talon twice as long as himself. Lifting his staff, he caught the second thrust from the massive talons of the Carnifex. Sparks showered over Aiexus as he strained himself against the incredible strength of the alien. The Carnifex shrieked in thriumph, believing its prey defeated. Then its head suddenly exploded as a staccato of heavy rounds punched through its open mouth, purple alien blood showering over Aiexus's form. Looking up from his laying position, he saw five shapes jumping down from the bunker he himself had been standing on earlier, weapons blazing into the horde that tried to pounce on the vulnerable Aiexus.
"Are you okay, sir?" said Ragaius, his helmet-less, shaven head glinting slighty in the bright sun. His eyes were on Aiexus the whole time, even as he sliced a hormagaunt in two with his power sword. Aiexus nodded and pushed himself up, grateful for the covering fire from his battle-brothers.
"Aye. Now, let's clean away this Xenos filth." he said, smiling at the Terminator Sergeant, before hurling himself back into the fight, force staff blazing with energy.
Anyway, I hope you will enjoy this little story^^
