new Imperial knights any tips?

I love my nids but I really wanted to paint some Armour and metal but didn't want to start another army due to having far too many figures and not enough space. So I bought a Imp. Knight as I can have an "army" of just 3 figures. but as this is my first departure from the nids I was wondering are there any do's and don'ts when putting my first list together.

Imperial Knights as a stand-alone army are incredibly simple. Just put as many in as the points allow. A 1850, you can fit 5 with Meltas. At 1500, can fit 4 with Battlecannons or Meltas. If you need to change points, then you can bring Gerantius to add 130 points. He's pretty cool.

The only part where Knights become trickier is if you ally something in, which is 95% of the time a good idea. If Tyranids are your only other army, then you can add a single Knight to the army surprisingly easily. Tyranids and Knights are great because they cover eachother's weaknesses perfectly. Knights are weak against Flyers and lots of troops, Tyranids excel vs those. Knights are awesome against high armor and CC beatsticksm which Tyranids suffer against. I run a Knight in all of my Tyranid lists now, I have no regrets!

Thanks for the info, do you have a preference between paladins or errants or does it depend on what army you are up against? and I didn't realise they could ally with my nids I was thinking of using ADL and quad gun emplacements with IG allies just for taking down flyers ( I don't have any books here at the moment to give the correct names etc.) or maybe a bastion and ADL as I can borrow these. Also what do you find to be the best tactic with knights?

I prefer the Errant because it can threaten more unit types, the Paladin can't touch a 2+ save. It also provides Nids with a much needed anti tank gun! For tactics I've only run Knights with Nids, and then I always give it a flank to charge up at full speed and force MU opponents to shoot it or run away, giving me whatever objectives were over there. If they do neither, I'll just assault and start killing things!
