In a local league, my nid army is preparing to assault a necron force. I need to write and post a narrative battle challenge. However, was having a hard time coming up with a reason that nids would go after necrons. It's not like they have biomass or anything. Here is what I came up with, but would definitely appreciate any constructive comments, especially if there is anything story-wise and fluff-wise that you could recommend. I apologize any bad grammar mistakes (i.e. and all the passive writing). On the second draft my plan is to clean up most of that.
Thanks for your time,

It was difficult to tell if the dense blanket covering the landscape was fog or smoke. All that was certain is that it was thick, and that the dim light from the system’s two distant white-dwarf stars barely penetrated it. The muddy ground beneath was tinged in a cold blue light, and the soil was so desiccated that it was pulling apart in jagged chasms. The end result was a motionless, endless, gray-white wasteland.
The pristine calm was shattered a moment later. Out of the smoke, several quick, darting movements became visible. Something small, maybe only a meter across, came bounding across the landscape at an almost unnatural speed. The small alien creature had six limbs and looked to be an equal combination of teeth and claws. The beast paused for a moment, turned as if searching for something, and then bounded off in a new direction. It was clearly headed towards something specific.
The creature took two large bounding leaps. On the third, something went wrong. Mid-leap, the small form was intercepted by a bright green brilliance… a ray of energy which moved even faster than the swift creature. As the alien flew through the air, its skin was completely flayed off and even the bones began to disintegrate. When it launched itself for the jump the beast was a fearsome conglomeration of teeth and claws. When it landed, there was no single piece of it left that was larger than a grain of sand.
Looking back now, towards where the green energy had come from, there was a statue… or was it a skeleton… a robot maybe? Whatever it was it stood alone, standing guard, protecting who knows what in this blasted hell. After a moment, it raised its weapon again, aiming at another of the impossibly fast alien creatures. There were several more of them now, following after the now-disintegrated leader beast. More green energy leaped out, wiping out several of the creatures. But there were still move.
The brood of beasts bounded past the lone soldier, almost as if they were not aware of the threat. Every second, another alien was blasted to nothingness by the eerie green light. There were no more than a dozen beasts left when they suddenly stopped moving as one. Each and every one of them lifted their heads as if listening to something far away. In that brief pause, two more were disintegrated. Then as one the remainders turned on the soldier as if seeing him for the first time and began bounding directly toward it. The relentless sentry continued blasting away, and the beasts continued to close.
It was close in the end. The soldier basted most of the aliens to dust, but a couple of them made it past his blaster and clamped onto robotic limbs with razor sharp claws. The soldier grabbed the aliens with its bony claws and began ripping them apart. Meanwhile, the alien beasts were clawing and scything in return, causing several robotic pieces to fall to the dirt. As the last alien beast landed on the ground, its body twitching in a death spasm, the robot took stock of its situation. After a few seconds, it had completed its repair protocol, reattaching a severed arm and re-integrating its missing sensor component. So completely had the warrior repaired itself, that other than the corpses at its feet, there was now little evidence that it had even seen combat.
For a few moments, the robotic sentinel was alone. Seemingly from out of nowhere, a stiff breeze came up across the battlefield. As the smoke cleared, it became evident that this was no longer an empty field of cracked earth and rock. At first, it looked as if the entire planet’s surface was moving, as if the ground had turned to shifting sand. Then it became clear, it wasn’t the ground that was moving, it was something much worse. A tide of creatures, stretching across the horizon, was moving forward in an endless wave.
The swarm had arrived…
