Considering Grey Knights.

Hey guys.
I've been collecting Warhammer for some time now, and I have always been about having a good, laid-back time.
I have run several armies in the past; Blood Angels, Nurgel Themed Chaos Marines and my favorite of all, Tyranids.

Aside from the campaign I'm currently in with my 'nids, I have never ever been interested in building a strong or cheesy list.
I've only ever wanted a relaxed "beer and pretzels" kind of atmosphere when I'm playing.

Things have changed... kinda.

My buddy and I are kicking together a bit of dosh to build up the most nasty, beardy, cheesy, "no one will ever want to play with you ever again" kind of list.
We will probably never actually run this list publicly, its not for beating casual players and its not for upsetting people in tournaments, its a counter for when we run into "that guy". The guy who stands around telling people how amazing he is and generally being a bit of a douche.
We want to beat "that guy" for all the people who will never get the chance. This wont be a list for bullying people, it's a list to stand up to the bullies.

I understand Grey Knights are supposed to be the dog's bolognaise at the moment for OP lists, so we think that's probably the way to go.
We will probably be picking the codex up mid-week so we can have a goods snoop at whats worth picking up.

We want a really small focused army and ideally we want to have a perfect list in mind and buy just the models we need to save on any unnecessary expense/time.

Anyone here play Grey Knights?
Any tips / opinions would be gratefully received.

GK are actually kind of two years ago at this point. Tau and Eldar are really the top of the heap right now.

Everything grey knights can take get force weapons and they get terminators as troops choices. from what I've seen I would say some GK termies a dreadknight and I guess draigo? then toss in LR or something. I've only faced GK once in an apoc. game.

do u know what "that guy" plays? grey knights can have some super horrible combo but most will cost and arm and a leg or tonnes of time converting

Gah, I hate Tau and Eldar. They are ugly and everyone plays them.
It's a shame to hear that GKs aren't what they used to be, it would have been nice to have a mega-hardcore list that 20 other people in the store don't already play.

Money and converting aren't really an issue as it's a side project that will probably be spread over several months. Both of us are pretty confident at kit bashing, so no worries there either.

I know it's hard to say without a specific army "style" in mind (shooty, fast, heavy etc) but I'm hoping to find a decent all-comers list when I have a snoop through the codex later this week.

GK are far from the bottom of the pile, but they certainly aren't what they were in 5th. The changes to Vehicle damage, Power Weapons, and Rapid Fire weapons in particular took down a number of their big advantages.

The people I hear about still having success with GK seem to generally be running Coteaz, some Henchmen (mostly for Psykers+a few Acolytes), and a bunch of Strike Squads with Psybolt Ammo, Daemon Hammer on the Justicar, and Psycannon. At least one Storm Raven is also pretty common, as they don't have native access to Interceptor otherwise. Psyflemen are still a thing, but not as great as they used to be, and you'll sometimes see a Dreadknight to handle the kind of Assault threats (i.e. Terminators) that Strike Knights can't really cope with.

Riptides and Wraithknights both just wreck Paladins, to the point where Draigo-Wing isn't really a thing anymore.

I'd build a solid GK list to counter Eldar/Tau.

Landraiders and stormravens for everything and be careful of interceptor.

I would try GKs. I have never played with them, but from everything I hear they can make nasty lists. I would suggest IG as at least an ally though, bring in some nasty pie plates from across the board or Vendetta spam to either draw fire or dunk on units with twinlinked lascannons and heavy bolters.

My primary competition is a Grey Knight player. Some really nasty things that I have seen him run are psyflemen dreads, nasty groups of henchmen in transports (not that difficult to get rid of, just annoying), but unfortunately for him, he doesn't innovate and adapt to new threats, so these are pretty easily countered.

A psyfleman dread is a dreadnought armed with two twin linked autocannons with psybolt ammo, twin linked s8 ap4, murders my warriors all the time. Also decent for downing flyers, but don't remember what section they're in.

Dreadknights are a pain, but not unstoppable, good for killing big nasties.

Terminators are cool, but with the exception of objective holding, the henchmen are always better in my opinion, less points in a faster unit, but generally less versatility.

He also use Stormravens to take out just about anything he wants to.

Unfortunately, I'm able to reliably beat his lists all the time, GK just aren't what they used to be.

As an experienced grey knight player the army suits a cheap troop build similar to 5th edition to keep the model count down.

Dread knights are dated but still add the scare factor. With all these psykers running about mind strike storm ravens are so handy.

I ran a coteaz list with 2 dread knights, 3 storm ravens, with coteaz and henchmen in h.bolter psybolt razorbacks for support.

I bought GKs back in the day when they were still called Daemon Hunters. I haven't played them in 6th edition but I still like the feeling of being outnumbered by other armies that are normally outnumbered (SM) and still able to hold their own. The only thing was that for all I had (maybe 35 models including vehicles) I have more that 2.5k points. All and all I think they are really neat. Makes me reminisce about how they had 3 separate ways to stop a psychic power. Ahh...good times.
