So, last week I posted pics of my WIP Biovores, in which I declared my dislike for the "gunbeast" look of them. Well, apparently that only applies to small 'nids, because my next project is a reinterpretation of the old "slug beast" Exocrine!
I was reading over Mr. Pink's Tyranid Archive posts again (I reread them every few months for design inspiration), and I remembered that I had wanted to rework the design of his "De-sluggified Exocrine" into something larger (original sketch by Roberto Cirillo). With the advent of the Tervigon / Tyrannofex kit, I figured a larger creature was an easier option than before. The original version by Mr. Pink was done with a Carnifex. I wanted to see how it would turn out using a Tyrannofex and Trygon.
What you see below is the very early stages. I've used a Trygon for the tail, and a Tyrannofex for almost everything else. The waist is glued together, the torso is glued together, and the gun is glued together. But none of those pieces are glued to each other yet. It's all just dry-fitting at the moment. I've also not started on any serious green-stuff work. That's going to come next.
You can see above that I'm also missing the forward limbs. At the time, I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep the gun-arm of the Tyrannofex or do the back-mounted cannon. I decided on the back-cannon, but haven't yet placed anything in the arm sockets. I'm thinking maybe scything talons to complete the spidery look. Kind of parallels some of the design decisions of the much larger Hierophant, too (I do like the Hierophant design).
A little close-up of the back-mount biocannon. It's just resting on the back with gravity at the moment, so it can be re-positioned rather easily. I want to be certain I get the angle and placement just right. I'm also debating about constructing a frill, much like the original slug Exocrine. If I did, the gun would sit behind the frill, using it as a shield of sorts.
Here you can see the rear of the biocannon is shielded with the front carapace pieces from two Trygon kits. I'm also using the "twin linked weapons" from Epoch Studios to flank the central weapon. These may survive as-is, or I may sculpt feeder tubes into the main weapon from them. Not yet decided.
As usual, constructive comments are welcome. I still have a few design decisions to make, so there's a long road ahead. Within the next few days I'll probably be sculpting out some of the gribbliness of the biocannon. Then I'll move on to the torso of the creature, and get the heart of the thing complete.
