Carnifexs Are they that bad?

So all the time i have played nids i have been told to never ever EVER field a fex. but the co-manager at my new local store has told me that fexs are really hated on too much and are pretty good when he used them. so I have come to the hive to ask for guidance. Are the fexs really terrible or are they just misused? I have bought a box And have no idea what to do with the fex inside

dakkafex carnifexes (two pairs of brainleech devourers) are good, because they add something only the hive tyrant can also have. Pretty much every other thing is iffy.

Combat carnifexes can just be replaced by the better, tougher trygon.

2 Pairs of Brainleech Devourers. That's the only setup that works and it's merely decent. Other shooting options range from meh to bad, and CC Carnifexes are incredibly bad.

The CC varieties need a better delivery method and greater durability for their cost (or the obvious points reduction) and that's where a lot of that static is coming from. There's no argument that mycetic spore delivery with devourers is the obvious effective load-out. Though, I have a hunch with the new tau-fest/eldar-fest we are likely to see, stranglethorn cannons might become more popular for the pinning alone. They can be very effective if you can saturate their side of the board with MC's at the same time as a carnifex; Especially if it's near expensive armor since they are absolutely fantastic at destroying tanks if left unchecked. They demand immediate attention from your opponent.

currently they aren't versatile, from what i hear they use to be boss... back before 5th and untill we get a new codex they're mainly just over priced (in terms of points) to be a good choice. yes a Dakkafex is decent for it's 230 pts but will likely only get 1turn of shooting maybe 2.

in non-/semi-competitive arenas they're ok but i wouldn't use them if you intend to play with highly competitive players.

I like to bring 1 Carnifex if i have the points to do it and if it is a friendly game.

Two dakkafex with a prime and venomthrope is scary, a fair chunk of points but a great distraction unit that will annihilate most things in combat whilst constantly throwing out a lot of shooting. The tl devs give a nice overwatch deterrent for even hammernators, you re roll all misses so effectively you end up with almost 24 chances to put s6 shots on target.

Carnifex aren't bad bad they are okay but can't do anything that another unit can do better and it's a bit overpriced.

The huge hate on the carnifex comes from the changes in tyranid codex. The carnifex WAS the old tyranid codex and the new model looked awesome and could be build in so many ways and you could have 6 of them in one list while being way cheaper than the current ones.

The most useful current carnifex is with the 2 devouers since you are putting out 12 str6 shots at 18 range while still being able to kill stuff in assaults.

Then there is the other mc's in our codex. For the same price you can get the tervigon and that is +2 more wounds, it's a psyker so biomancy powers and you spawn gaunts while being almost as scary in assaults and even more so if you get the warp speed power.
Trygon is faster tougher and can have synapse and almost equal guns as a carnifex while being just a little more expensive. If you are going to use a dakkafex then you can just pay 10 more points and go with a hive tyrant who have better stats and is also a psyker.

So no the carnifex isn't useless as the hate might make you belive but it's not WORTH using when compared to other units in our codex.

I like my dakka fex. He shoots, he's got a fair few attacks, and he'll ST 9 the (please do not swear) outa stuff.

let me clarify:

as others have said, dakka fex in a pod puts out enough shots, espeically with OA buffs, that it's worthwhile.

for the rest, just no. at 100-120 base they'd be great.

Useless would mean it did nothing on the board but that's not the case just that we got things that do what it does and more in the codex but yeah sure it kinda means that.

The dakkafex isn't a bad idea though if you have the HQ slot free it would be better to go with a dakka flyrant or dakka footrant

In all other cases the carnifex is an inferior choice to units like the tervigon, trygon, mawloc and biovores. That doesn't mean you shouldn't field one, but bear in mind that there are better ways to do what the various carnifex load outs do.
