outflank with vangaurd strike

My devil gaunts deepstruck mishaped this last game and got placed by my opponent on the opposite side of the map .

I was wondering if outflanking them is viable or if everyone pods them and people generally get poor results from outflanking.

I was also wondering if the deployment is the corners deployment (vangaurd strike) are the outflanking zones the short and long board edges?

How did you mishap with a spore pod? It is almost impossible.

You are better off DS than Outflank, just don't go too close to the edge of the board.

spore pod rolled 10 inches and landed off the board when I was trying to get them behind some marines. I also had problems with zoans having to DS w/in 18" of the landraider they then failed to explode . Abbadon made zoanthroape quishe the next turn.

You outflank on the shorter edge, as specified in the rules.

It's viable but not as potent as the spore, especially without Swarmlord to let you re-roll the side.

If you intend to do it, try to ensure there are targets/objectives on both sides.

remember the brood can move 6" from the spore now, not the original 2" it used to have to be in.

Ah, then don't sweat it, you just got really unlucky. Bad luck happens, you don't need to completely ditch your strategy because of it.

And actually, Zoans should have been a decent tarpit against abbadon.

Lets say he gets 7-8 attacks, 5-6 hits, 4 wounds, you miss 1.333 wounds. At that rate, it should take several turns for the zoans to die.
If he switches to the other weapon:
4 attacks, 2-3 hits, 2 ish wounds, .6666 failed saves So should still last several turns.

And... if you hit him with Enfeeble once, that will really stretch things out. And if you can stay in for 4 rounds, there is a good chance he rolls a 1 on his demon weapon.


I was tied up Logan Grimnar for probably 4 turns with 2 zoans by casting enfeeble and the 3+ invuln save.

One of the advantages with the BRB powers, is you can use them even if you are in combat, or even if your target is in combat.

I was thinking about replacing the dakka fexes with devil gaunts in pods. My opponent has taken like 6 obliterators the last few games and been trying to focus fire my MCs because i see 1 dakkfex=190pts 15 devilgaunts+pod=190pts I can drop the 2 dakka fexes and gain a significant #of shots. or drop 1 dakka fex for another pod and have 190 pts for something like gargoyles for a screen/tarpit or put yamgarls back in

my army includes the swarmlord right now so im +1 to reserve rolls and usually the scatter die treats me better.

dakkafex vs podded devilgaunts, yes you get a significant increase in volume of shots, but it's S4 shooting and not twin linked. you can't threaten vehicles that are more than AV10 rear with devils (though certainly, there aren't a whole lot with rear AV11+). they're good at killing different things. be aware of what you're trading for.

for the points against AV10 they will do statistically the same thing.

pod devilfex does 4.5 hull points (3 are pens)
pod devilgants (19) 4.75 hull points

so it really depends on the list your running. i personally like the gants better because the fex and gants seem to die just the same and at least if one 1 gant is alive i can score an objective.

edit: nevermind. last example used 19 gants in a pod. i used 15 from the example before when doing the maths.

when you're playing vanguard, it's far more useful to choose usual reserves, instead of outflank.

thanks for the responses. my strategy has evolved away from both of those options though. I'm using zoanthropes and ymgarls now (about to try 2x2 zoanthropes in pods this next game)
