"I'm cold Sarge."
"Me too. Sit still it'll all be over soon."
The Sergeant did not know how true his words were. The remaining members of his squad sat huddled under what they considered would be the equivalent of a tree on Terra. The night had moved in earlier than they expect and the swarm of hormagaunts that followed it was unrelenting. What felt like hours was a mere twenty-seven minutes of gun fire. The swarm seeming to double for ever one xenos they killed. Finally, as if by some divine will of the Emperor, the onslaught ceased. The bugs retreated and the remaining members of the Karskins were able to regroup.
"When can we expect an evac Sarge?"
"I don't know. Our coms were damaged in the assault and we wont be considered over do for two weeks."
"Two weeks!" Scream Guardsman Vortel. "We'll be dead in two hours if those damn bugs come back!"
"Calm yourself Guardsman! You are a member of the Karskin Elite, do not let your faith in the Emperor waiver after all you have survived this night!" Sergeant Terrell was a young man, younger than Vortel in fact, but has seen twice the combat missons as he. Always able to maintain his calm in the most dire of situations. It is the reason he rose through the ranks of the Imperial Guard as quickly as he had.
"For give me Sir, it's just so bitterly cold. This is worse than some of the artic worlds I've been on. It almost feels unnatural"
"Keep your focus. Put your mind on something else. It will help." The Sergeant didn't even believe his own words that time.
"Hmm." grunted Vortel "And I suppose if we all think of a nice big campfire we'll start to sweat?" Vortel sat back against the trunk of the large tree like fond. It moved. Vortel jumped up and leveled his laspistol at the plant. The other guardsman around him doing them same, but only out of instinct. None of them felt the movement.
"Did you feel that?! It moved!" They all watched the fond expecting it to shake or move. Nothing.
"There's nothing here, it's your nerves Vortel." Sergeant Terrell stated as he walked around the large plant in a cautious maner. "See nothing at all."
The band of Imperial Guardsmen sat back down when the trees and plants around them began to rustle. "The wind." One of the other gaurdsmen said. At that moment there was a loud, piercing scream. Not human, not animal. Something else. The guardsmen ready their weapons looking all around for what could have made the sound. Nothing. Again.
"Grrah! that's it! I'm leaving here now! Who's with me?" Guardsman Vortel exclaimed. The rest of his squad, except for the Sergeant stood at his side rambling over each other, but all agreeing with him.
"We're safer here. Trust me." The Sergeant said in his usually calm tone.
"I'm done listening to you. We're done listening to you. We are leaving. Stay here if you want, maybe this plant will be the only thing to eat you." With that the remaining members of the squad headed off into the night. The Sergeant urging them to stay, but refusing to go with them.
A sound was heard. This time like the flapping of bat wings. The guardsmen looked up. The moons and stars no longer visable.
"Shrikes!" Screamed one of the guardsmen, but it was too late. the winged warriors were already among them. Ripping and tearing limbs from bodies, tossing them back and forth like a couple of dogs with a new toy. The guardsmend scattered in fear, firing random laspistol shots but hitting nothing.
"Get back to the tre...!" Yelled Vortel, but he was too late his words cut short. His head removed from his body by a swooping Shrike. The remaining members of his unit running back to the trees. The Sergeant providing cover fire as they ran, but it wasn't enough. The swarm of winged tyranids picked apart the crowd of Imperial Guardsmen like a school of piranha on a dead fish.
The Sergeant watched as his entire unit fell to the assault. For the first time in his career he felt hopeless. As quickly as the attack began it was over. The winged beasts flying off into the night sky once more. The Sergeant stood alone in the open, smoke billowing from the muzzle of his laspistol.
Sergeant Terrell stood a moment longer staring at the carnage before him. He turned to head back to the large tree, but stopped dead in his tracks. His gaze fixed on the Lictor that had appeared seeming out of nowhere behind him. Sergeant Terrell raised his laspistol to fire, but it was too late. His body torn to shreds by the claws and talons of the beast.
Well there you have it. Let me know what you think. I'm not Mantis, but I enjoyed writting it.
Thanks guys!
