First game with Tyranids 2000 pts

Hi all,

This Sunday I am playing a fun relaxed game against a good friend.
He will be using his IG army and he is an experienced player.
I have decided to use my, so far untried, Tyranid army that I have just aquired.
I will list the models that I have and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Be aware that I have no time to buy, assemble etc etc any further models...this is what I have:

HIVE TYRANT
ZOANTHROPE / DOOM OF MALANTAI
TERMAGANT x 20
HORMAGAUNTS x 20
GENESTEALERS x 30
BROODLORD
WARRIORS x 3
RAVENORS x 3
TRYGON
CARNIFEX
GARGOYLES x 10
RIPPER SWARMS x 4

Any advice for an effective list using any of the above models?
Im happy if I lose, I just want to get to know the Tyranids and how to play them

How is the hive tyrant modeled? Most people run him as a flyrant with dual twin linked devourers. If he is a footslogger I highly recommend asking your opponent if he is okay with you running him as a flyrant anyway as you don't have any tyrant guard so he will get focused easily. The genestealers you should run as ygmarls as they are almost always better. Run the zoanthrope as DoM in a spore, try to find something around your house to represent the spore. How is the carnifex modeled? I would probably recommend running him as a dakkafex (dual twin linked devourers just like the tyrant) as you are in desperate need of ranged anti armor and he could pop some light tanks from afar. You need synapse so I would run the trygon as a prime and don't ds with him. The gargoyles are a small unit so keep them vanilla and run them as a screen to give your flyrant cover. Use the warriors as your synapse base for your swarm but beware high strength shots, you don't have much synapse and their deaths could hurt. Run the homies in one giant brood, they won't be very effective in smaller units.

The Tyrant is a footslogger but my friend will be cool about playing it as a flyrant.
The carnifex can also be played as a dakkafex with no problems.

The DoM sounds good and I do have a spore pod to use him in.

The Trygon Prime is a good idea too.
I like the sound of Ymgarls to mess up his objectives.

Well, the game went better than expected.
I weathered 2 turns of brutal brutal shooting that decimated my line before the 2 units of Ymgarl Genestealers popped up and in conjunction with 2 Flyrants tore apart his right flank, shooting and chomping an armoured sentinel, 3 heavy weapon teams and a 40 man unit + commisar!

The Doom did diddly squat and the carnifex squished another squad of men so the game ended in a draw...which was quite a relief as it looked by turn 2 that I was going to get tabled!!

I LOVE PLAYING NIDS!!!

Congrats on the draw, which is really pretty good for a first game vs IG.

I think IG versus Nids is one of the best looking matchups in 40k. The first few rounds you're trying to close with the enemy and generally get shot to pieces a lot, but hell yeah, when you finally close that distance........
