dakkafex in spore vs. trygon

so I've been doing much better with my nids past few months thanks to all you strategic masterminds. so thanks in advance!

one thing ive been noticing is my trygon is usually shark bait in every game. i usually run one or two of these guys, and i usually deep strike them in. now usually they get shot up with in a turn or two, or gets face rolled by death company with power swords. but im thinking about running a dakkafex in a spore pod.

the ability to drop in and cause a ruckus in the turn he drops in by banging up the rear armor of some tanks could potentially do more damage on average than what my trygons do.

plus i found that not deep striking my trygons and running them instead becomes just as bad for them, being gunned down by razorbacks and devastator squads just as fast (kinda hard to hide the big guy behind terrain)

any thoughts on the dakka-deep-strike-fex-spore-shooty-heavy support as opposed to the run-up-die / deep-strike-die before-i-can-do-my-damage trygons?

remember your MC get cover saves from area terrain just by being in it, like regular infantry now. don't get them anywhere close to hammernators or DC with power weapons, that's exactly what your opponent wants you to do with them.

podded dakkafex are excellent (though somewhat expensive) disruption and mid-late game punch units as well. send them after objective campers and weapons teams.

Trygons need to be extra punch added to whatever strategy you are going for. If your army is mostly foot slogging, foot slog them. If your army is mostly reserve, then deep strike them.

Make sure you have them get some form of cover (ideally hiding behind ruins) on their way up the board. Remember, you only need them to be 25% covered to get the cover save. Also as giga pointed out, you can get them a cover save by having a toe in some area terrain.

If your enemy powers them down, then that means they are not shooting much at the rest of your army, capitalize on that. Trygons are great bullet sponges. They take a LOT of firepower to burn down. Keep that in mind.

I prefer the trygon prime over the fex still gets 12 shots but with the extra wounds and the ability of getting regen I think he is much scarier not to mention the prime can issue a challenge shut at least part of that DC down. I neved deep strike the trygon alone I prefer to run him with the doom and one or two flyrants makes your opponent make a life decision which usually leaves the trygon alive after all no one wants to take more than two rounds of the dooms soul sucking and that leaves the trygon to do what he does best.

On it's own, a Trygon is definitely more worth it's points, coming in at 200 points compared to 190 (230 if you include the Mycetic Spore), it gets 50% more wounds, higher weapon skill and initiative, more attacks, an inbuilt deep strike ability, the flexibility of choosing to start on the board or in reserves, and a shooting attack that doesn't require sacrificing one or both Scything Talons.

The dakkafex is smaller and therefore easier to hide, has higher strength (though the Trygon can use Smash attacks to beat that) and a much more powerful shooting attack, but is generally outclassed. However, thanks to it's shooting attack, it can do a significant amount of damage the turn it arrives, taking out a vehicle or heavy support squad, the Trygon generally can't do much the turn it arrives if it chooses to deep striike, having to wait for the next turn to see some use. For that reason alone the dakkafex is worth consideration.

Personally, I like using one of each, usually deep striking both (as well as Zoanthropes, the Doom of Malan'tai and devilgants all in pods), then when they arrive my opponent will take out the dakkafex and the Doom which already did some damage, then the Trygon will charge in on my next turn and tear it up.

If you held it back an extra turn maybe enough of the enemy forces would be destroyed or otherwise engaged and it'd get to make it to combat. Still, the enemy shooting that would have taken down the trygon will be used on other units instead

If your deepstriking trygon is being killed as soon as it arrives then it may aswell be a mawloc. It's a cheaper bullet sponge, can be guaranteed to appear on T2 (unless the opponent gets first turn and kills it) and may even pull off the terror from the deep attack. Granted it doesn't do much in combat but units hiding at the back of the board don't often fight well in combat either, and a mawloc certainly has the capacity to smash a vehicle. If it weren't for the physical size of them I'd run one or even two mawlocs

Personally, I think the fire magnet aspect of the trygon is one of it's best features. A deep striking dakkafex has the same effect on enemy fire but has 2 wounds less.

I take a trygon - buff him up with endurance run him into a piece of area terrain right in the middle of the field, and advance my entire army while my opponent can't help but shoot at the trygon and ignore the tervigons (the lynchpin of most Nid army lists these days). If he lives - he is wrecking something turn two. If he dies, my tervigons are unscathed - catapulting spawned gaunts into CC turn 2. All about target saturation.

I found the same in my games, whatever the Trygon did it died before doing anything, and I don't want it to be a bullet sponge!

Dakkafex's for me are the way forward the amount of destruction when they hit, a distraction that can't be ignored, 12 shots re-rollable str 6 yes please with those grabby Mycetic spore tentacles and any guns you put on it! so thats 21 shots in total (spore with deathspitter) damage output.. immense! Then charge to absorb overwatch for 'stealers etc!

A Mawloc on its own has out-performed my trygon on several occasions, everyone has different opinions, just drop three dakkafexs on people and watch people cry lol, same with three deepstriking trygons or three mawlocs.

I just think Dakkafex's are superior due to amount of second turn damage and re-rollable overwatch as well to boot and a denial unit in the spore pod.
