Returning player, 2k list. Need advice

Good afternoon folks. Let me preface this thread by saying I have been deployed to Afghanistan since before 6th Ed was released. So I haven't been able to look over the new book or get any time playing with it. I'm heading back to the states in the next couple months and want to revamp my existing list. Please feel free to tear it apart and offer any advice you can. Thanks in advance!

My idea behind this list was to deep strike/infiltrate as much as seemed reasonable with the rest walking it. I threw deathleaper in to help with reserves and because I just happen to have a soft spot for him. Gargs are screening for the flyrant. Have at it guys.

I think the list looks pretty good. The biggest change you might not be aware of is that stealers can't charge turn 1 when infiltrating or when coming on outflanking. That said, some people on the forum have made good use of infiltrating them out of synapse and going to ground in cover to help them survive incoming fire turn one, and then moving something to cover them in synapse so they recover and can act normally in your turn.

With as many reserves as you plan on having, it might be worthwhile to find 25 pts somewhere and give the flyrant Hive Commander to ensure nearly everything comes in turn 2.

Id recommend taking out the death leaper, you seem to want him for the +1 to reserves but giving up 140 pts and a coveted elite spot for that is not a good trade. As VTAeries said Hive commander could do that, and it is only a fraction of the cost. With that extra elite slot you might want to add in some Hive Guard if you can find the points. They are awesome at taking out light armor, and at the 2k you will be facing many mech lists. Of course that depends on your local meta but at my store you certainly would. Why the Dakka Fex? The point cost is fairly high, while carnifexes aren't as effective as they used to be in the old rules With an extra 230 points you could almost take another Hive Tyrant which would fufill the same shooting role while providing synapse and having the awesome new flyer rules (You should read the new book asap when you get back, Flyers rules are pretty nice and assaulting has significantly changed).

Now to the genestealers, I personally love those guys cause they are what first brought me to Nids, but under the new rules, shooting is favored over assaulting. I suggest playing a few games with them and then deciding if you still think they work well for you in 6th ed.

DoM is still a beast in this edition, though many people may not like you fielding him, and he will draw a lot of fire the turn he comes down. Dont be surprised if he dies that turn after failing his 3++ and gets ID.

I dont ever use Biovores, so I can't tell you how effective they are. I just really don't like the models, or the idea of some giant fat piece of artillery in a super fast aggressive alien army.

Are you DSing the Trygon? With only four MC and a DoM, he may get focused the turn he comes in. Generally people shoot at a giant model that just popped up in the middle of their army, and sometimes Trygons fall flat on their face and die when that happens. That being said, when that guy survives he seriously rains on the other army's parade. He tends to be more reliably effective when he runs up the table. I know that isnt the play style you were going for with your army but its a reality. Play a few games with him either way and see which you like better.

Thats about all I have, your list looks pretty good and everyone of my comments are just preferences really. When you get back be sure to give us a few battle reports, everyone here is really helpful and loves to see how fellow tyranid players perform.

Hey oranos, thanks a lot for the feedback. Going in reverse order here with responses. I was on the fence about DSing the Trygon as I haven't gotten to play him yet. He and a few other models are yet to be assembled and on my list of "to do's". I was thinking DS just to keep with the general theme of the list, but I've also seen that people like to run him up the table.

Biovores are something I've wanted to add but never bothered. I too hate the models so they're going to be a custom job. But everything I've read here seems to imply that they rain anti-infantry death. I most often come up against 2 SM players, 1 BA and 1 vanilla. Neither are very vehicle heavy last I played them.

DoM is one of those additions that I expected to draw both fire and complaints, but it is what it is. But I understand what you mean. Will probably give him a try and see how it goes.

On the GS I have also seen people agreeing with you on their lifespan and effectiveness in 6th. I had wanted Ymgarls in the list but couldn't manage them points/elite slot wise. I've got fond memories of their murder sprees and it makes me sad to read that they've lost that flair.

The dakkafex is another carryover from my old 5th list. I haven't gotten used to the fex being sad as they are now. TBH I hadn't considered a second flyrant, though I do like the idea. As you brought up, I haven't had any experience with the new flyer rules so that's probably what stopped me.

Lastly, Deathleaper. That's a grab bag of reasons for being included. 1, Lictors are what got me interested in Tyranids back in the day, so it's hard for me to shake that. I did want him for the help with reserves, but I also love the terror factor the character brings. I completely see your point on the cost vs switching in some hive guard and I had that thought as well. Little difficult to explain I suppose, but he's just one of those choices I really wanted to find room for. But I see your logic and will probably switch him out. Thanks again.

Just to play devil's advocate with DeathLeaper, he can be great fun with enemy psykers. Not a huge concern against BA and Vanilla marines, but for Wolves and Eldar, it's always nice to drop a psyker's LD by D3 and then try to keep them in shadows if at all possible.

Not sure how dakkafexes got worse in the new edition...they are now great at taking out lightly armored vehicles due to the introduction of hull points, and get a high strength HoW attack on the charge. Still overcosted, yes, but better in 6th than they were in 5th.

I know they're overcosted, but I do still love them. Just trying to find room at this point. Lotta options with little wiggle room. 2nd flyrant or dakkafex?

If you love them, then by all means keep the dakkafex. brianb9999 was completely right with the HoW attack (look it up when you come home, if you know anything about Fantasy its kinda like Impact hits) and the Fex can still destroy light vehicles and infantry with ease from range and eat heavier vehicles in CC. If you find yourself lacking some mobility (shouldnt be a problem in a mostly DS army) or lacking synapse then switch to the second flyrant. Play it out and see which one you prefer.

As for the Biovores, I have heard the same thing, they seem to be great anti infantry units. To correct the models, you could just use pyrovores instead and change them slightly if the pyrovore look appeals to you more.
