New to Forum, 2000 pt Flying Circus

Hi everyone! I'm brand new to the messageboards. I dabbled in 40k years ago but had to stop (lack of funds). I want to start up a tyranid swarm and feel pretty good about this list. Do you guys think this could be viable for friendly/semi-competitive play?

In order to have a second detachment doesn't it have to be 2000 points minimum? As far as I understand it even 1999 doesn't count for a second detachment. Unless of course your apponent agrees to it.

I believe there's a discussion on the topic of Double force org and stuff of the 2000 pt level of which people are arguing the wording of playing a 2000 pt game and playing up to 2000pt game, basically do you have to have 2000pt list or just play a 2000pt game.
Maybe it was a different forum.

Well, if you and your opponent agree to play double FOC at less than 2000 pts, who's gonna stop you?

But according to the rules, 1999 pts is a single FOC and 2000 pts is a double FOC. (that's why you will see a lot of tourneys with 1999 + 1 pts. It's a single FOC for 2000 pts)

On topic. A strange list, to be sure. But with all those Flyers could be really fun to play. You have a lot of Troops in Hormagaunts and Warriors, but it's not the best quality of Troops. You can of course take the enemy's attention away from those Troops with lots of flying MCs, but you'll have to make sure they (the FMC's) carry their weight.

As I see it, three Flyrants with each a single HVC are not going to cut it. I would consider changing the weapons on two of them to double twin-linked devourers.

I also see you are using 100 points of spore-mines. Apart from the restriction of having max 3 mines per brood (I think), I think there are better ways to spend those points. Maybe invest them in more warriors and split them up in two groups? 2 Hive Guard?

I edited the list.

I couldn't bring myself to model those gimpy little devourer arms on my rants so I gave them stranglethorn cannons, definitely an improvement over the hvc.

Additionally, I decided that slow footslogging instakillable melee warriors would create an obvious and defenseless target for S8+ weaponry, so replaced the warriors with faster shrikes.

I've been hearing such dreadful things about harpies that I decided four hive tyrants would be more solid a choice.

I realize naked hormies aren't the best troops choice, which is why I got MORE of them. Because quantity > quality.



FINALLY: I can remove one 50 point shrike if I want, to give hive commander to two flyrants and outflank 50 gaunts.

A realization: My list seems to have relatively little in the anti-flyer department besides some vector striking flyrants. Is simply ignoring enemy flyers a viable tactic? Especially considering that they aren't scoring units.

Ignoring flyers is a viable tactic. However, you need to build a list that can do just that and survive, which is not easy. Ignoring flyers means either you're planning on minimizing their impact on you by using terrain as much as possible to your advantage, getting critical units into close combat as quickly and frequently as possible, or taking models tough enough to endure the type of weapons flyers are going to be sporting. The other popular approach to avoiding flyers is to bring so many bodies that flyers can't kill enough of them to have an impact your strategy, plus you cover so much of the board that flyer movement is strategically restricted because your opponent's model can't stop on top of your models. It's not easy, but with planning and patience it can be done.

A final realization: I can dump all psychic powers for biomancy rolls, hoping for as many endurance rolls as possible.
