Hyperios Air Defence Platform

Anyone else seeing these pop up in marine lists at tournaments? The tournaments in my area are allowing 40k approved forgeworld. I am finding that people are running 2 units of 3, and these anti air missiles pretty much curb stomp my Flyrants in 2 turns. If I am lucky to get iron arm and cast it before I get shot they live a bit longer. How are people dealing with these annoying automated artillery?

Ugh...now I know what to watch out for now that some of our league tournaments are allowing forgeworld...All the more reason for me to run swarmlord with a single guard or an armored shell tyrant. The skies suck lately.

I'll admit, I lurvs me some Hyperios platforms.

That being said, normal shooting and close combat can take them out, like any other artillery platform. Leave your flyrants in reserve, or leave them landed behind cover until they're taken care of.

1: mawlocs. Immobile and therefore die turn 2 if it hits the arty
2: Irom arm the Tyrant. BS3 TL on the hyperios means that with a unit of 4, 3 hit, VS T8 1.5 wounds which you can still generate cover saves for.
3: Deepstrike the Flyrant gliding. Often by turn 2-3 most of the enemy is engaged with other thing and some of the turrets could very well be dead. Deepstriking it gets it into the combat fast and within TL devourer range. Also allows you to DS out of LOS of the turrets.
4: Poison. T6 means little to poison gaunts. Simply drown it in weight of attacks.


Really they arent that good vs any other army besides nids. Missiles vs AV12 fliers really doesnt work. 140 points for 4 gets you 1 glance 1 pen on a 130 point vendetta or 2 pens on a frisbee. Thats pretty expensive for such mediocre results.

TL Lascannons on Sabres are much better. 50 points per, but T7 and more wounds.

I say for a game, use the GK or Necron codex and then use allies with GK or Necrons if allowed, just to teach them a lesson while using Tyranid minis. LOL.

The two times I ran into these things was against a deathwing army and against a space wolf army. The deathwing was my first experience and I chose to bring my flyrants in from reserve. Two flyrants came from reserve on my turn 2 and he shot all 6 at one flyrant. I failed my jink saves and died. He then proceeded to shoot at my other flyrant a turn later (his turn 3) and killed it as well. Against the space wolf army I started my flyrants on the table since I had first turn. 1 had iron arm, the other not. The iron armed flyrant did mostly well until I failed a grounding test on turn 5. But the other flyrant bit the dust turn 3 to his hyperios launchers.

I know they aren't super strong, but they are annoying knowing that every turn you will be taking missile shots to the face. I was just looking to see if other people had dealt with them, and if so what they did to keep their flying creatures alive.

There's a reason I lurve me some Ymgarl Genestealers! Especially if your Tyrant already has Hive Commander.

Just keep the Tyrant on foot or in reserve until they show up (usually turn 2) and then tear them to shreds. I usually run two squads of Yealers which help deal with most major backfield threats. If your opponent is savvy and hiding them behind an Aegis Defence Line of something though you may have to get creative. By which I mean leg it over the Defence Line and munch them up before your Yealers get shot to pieces.

I think the solution here is to keep your flyrants gliding until they are removed. Also just in general, always try to get your flyrants cover so you never have to jink.

Ymgarls are a good solution. If you want to add insult to injury you could glide your flyrants over to them and beat them up in melee.

That said I think you have much more to fear from Contemptor Dreads what with their absurd number of anti air shots and interceptor.

I went to a Forge-world allowed tournament last year and almost every marine list was running at least one squad of these. And every Guard list had Sabres. It was a nightmare.

I tried Ym'garls but they didn't seem all that effective. They jumped out and charged fine, but even with auto hits 8 T6 wounds with a 3+ (?) save meant they didn't even wipe out a single squad and I was then informed that as the Hyperios launchers are unmanned artillery you can't be locked in combat with them (*note* I've never actually checked this ruling, by that point I was so bored of my opponents army I just let it slide) and the 'stealers were promptly shot to bits next turn.

Since they aren't vehicles, surely they can be spirit leeched with their LD of - (which counts as 0)?

Yes, but being interceptor with S8 weaponry, they are a significant threat to the Doom.


Though upon reflection. While the Doom would probably die if your opponent shot at it, it would distract this gun array from shooting at your flyers. Or if your opponent shot at your flyers, doom would certainly destroy the lot of them. You could stick your opponent with a catch 22.

Though for 140 points, 4 of these things are rather a bargain.
