Had an impressive, largely friendly 3v3 today - (1k per player - non-ally rules)
On my side: Nids, Orks and SM
Opponent's Side: Space Marines (Iron Hands fluff), Eldar w/ Dark Reapers, IG.
I'm getting a proper army list from my friends - will edit the post when I do. Some details are fuzzy - Too many things going on, but the general gist is there.
Nids (Me!) -
HQ - Tervigon w/ Catalyst, Toxin sacs
Elites - 1x2 Hive Guards, 1 Venomthrope
Troops - 4x5 genestealers w/ TS + Broodlord w/ Scytals (mixed biomancy and Telekinesis)
Fast Attack - 1x10 Gargoyles
Off the top of my head. my allies -
Orks -
HQ - Big Mek w/ Kustom Force Field
Elites - (I think?) Nob Squad with around 15 Nobz and some banner bearer.
Troops - 1x20 Shootas, 2x20 Slugga Boyz
SM -
HQ - Er... looked like a Master of Forge. He never showed up. xD
Troops - 2x Scout Marine sniper squads w/ Missile Launchers
Heavy/Fast attack - Storm Eagle and Storm Talon
Heavy - Contemptor Dreadnought w/ Plasma (something) and Assault cannon
Opponents:
IG (Catachan theme)
HQ: Iron Hand Stracken w/ command squad
Elites: Drop troops
Troops: 2x Catachan troops, with Heavy Weapons team (I believe)
1x Valkyrie dropship (dunno FOC position)
Heavy: 1x Vendetta with battle cannon, 2 plasma sponsons, 1 hull-mounted bolter
Space Marines (Iron Hands fluff):
HQ: 1 Master of Forge (attached to Sternguard)
Elites: 1x 10 Sternguards (3 combi plasmas) in Drop Pod, 1 Techmarine (attached to Sternguard)
Troops: 1x8 Tac Marines, 1x5 Scouts (Honestly can't remember offhand)
Heavy: 1x Heavy Dreadnought
Eldar:
HQ: Maugen-Ra (Dark Reaper phoenix lord)
Troops: 1x10+ Dire Avengers in Wave Serpent, 1x7-8 Dark Reapers
Heavy: Fire Prism
Deployment (and some movement in turn 1)
Questions first:
1) Genestealers with Telekine Dome: If I suffer multiple shooting wounds from Overwatch and save them all, I can deflect them at the charged unit (being the closest) since they're currently NOT engaged until I get to b2b right?
2) Drop troops jumped out of a Valkyrie, but scattered ONTO the flyer's base. Do they get destroyed, or deploy normally (as per page 80, BRB) since the base does not count and the Flyer was friendly?
3) Do models from opposite teams sharing the same Area Terrain get to make Cover Saves when shot at?
1 Broodlord rolls Iron Arm and Telekine dome - deflects 2 overwatched Melta wounds and 1 Lasgun wound back into the charged unit. I can deflect shots back into this unit before I get into base contact right?
4) The recent Nid FAQ said that as soon as a Synapse Creature comes into range, a pinned unit can Regroup. Can I regroup and assault in the turn that a Tervigon ran during its Shooting phase into Synapse range?
Details:
Total turns played: 5 (rolled a 2 at the end)
Table size: 8x4 feet - trench system and realms of battle sets
Mission type: Big Guns never Tire
Additional fun stuff: Large gas tanks with AV 10. 2 glances or 1 penetration to cause them to explode 1D6" at S5 AP4.
Turn 1:
Opponents deploy first. We choose not to seize initiative to see what they do. Most of our gribblies deployed or infiltrated into the trench system. Catachan with heavy weapons deploys in our deployment zone, far right.
Other units infiltrated on their side of the table behind cover - snipers infiltrate on top of an objective, my Genestealers infiltrate near another on the same side.
Rolled night fighting. No notable warlord traits (my Tervi got Legendary Fighter...)
On my side - Deployed Gargoyles as a screen with Venomthrope providing cover saves on the Tervigon, Hive Guards and them. All Genestealers infiltrated into the trenches.
Broodlords rolled the following Psychic powers:
Brood 1 - Iron Arm, Objuration mechanicum (far left)
Brood 2 - Iron Arm, Telekine dome (far right)
Brood 3 - Enfeeble, Haemorrage (dropped)
Brood 4 - same as 3.
Big Mek deploys in wall-of-green (Boyz -> Shoota Boyz -> Nobz) with KFF to protect them all.
SM player infiltrated his Snipers on top of a battlement to launch missiles at enemy
Opponent Turn 1 -
IG: Vendetta fires main Ordnance and uses Searchlights on my Genestealers, who take a 4+ cover save and only lose 2 models. Heavy weapons team shoots the Telekine Dome stealer brood, kills 2. (Brood 3 - 4 models left, brood 4 - 4 models left)
Eldar: Dark Reapers prioritize my Tervigon. Thanks to Night Fighting, the Tervi gets a 3+ save (5+ venomthrope & >24" range) and only takes 1 wound.
Fire Prism targets my illuminated Genestealers (only models under 36") - kill about 2 more (brood 3 - 2 models left. Broodlord is down to 1 wound)
Space Marine: Snipers farthest away target Orks, kill 2.
Enemy scouts on far side of battlefield target Orks, because they're the only targets in range. Kill a few, negligible.
Enemy Scouts roll a Scatterfield, Dark Reapers roll a Skyfire Nexus
Our Turn 1 -
All boyz move forward - several poor DT rolls force them to only move 3-4".
Objuration Genestealer brood moves along the trench system, intent on targeting the Vendetta.
Stealer Brood 2 moves forwards to go for objective on the broken aquila (right side of picture) but fails its Move Through Cover spectacularly and barely clears the trench, Stealer Brood 3 moves up to the Aquila instead.
Gargoyles jump 12" to provide cover saves for both broods.
Telekine Dome Stealer brood moves along trench system to attempt to assault the heavy weapons team. (casts Telekine Dome)
Friendly Scout Marines don't move, fires missiles at now-illuminated Vendetta (failed to penetrate).
Tervigon casts Catalyst on closest enfeeble stealer brood near broken aquila.
All genestealers run - Stealer broods 3 and 4 make it into terrain but don't reach the objective.
Gargoyles - 4 models manage to shoot Catachans, cause only 1 unsaved wound.
OM Stealers (brood 1) reveal objective (barely 3")- Booby Trapped! Just outside of the Large Blast radius so no wounds.
Turn 2:
Opponents -
Iron Hands: Sternguard drop-pod drops in at the shattered aquila objective (right side of table from my side). Scatters about 7-8" upwards. Sternguards deploy towards objective. Revealed to be Ammo Storage (rerolls To Hits of 1)
Sternguard fires into Brood 3 with the 2+ wound rounds. Bad dice means he fails most of his To Hits, takes 1 Gets Hot! from his TL plasma pistol. His general streak of bad luck rolls continues to the end of the game...
Scouts target large gas tank that Orks have gathered around - the missile misses completely. Tac Marines target it, blow up one, only catches 4, wounds 2. Dreadnought fires into the Orks, misses its shots. (bad luck...)
Eldar: Dark Reapers keep shooting at my Stealers, but Gargoyle screen and terrain give them some saves. Brood 2 loses last stealer, Broodlord takes 1 more wound. Fire Prism and Serpent move along the side of the table, fire into the Stealer broods but because of the Drop Pod/etc., the obscured LOS gives me a 4+ save and he fails to wound at all with multiple misses or failed To Wounds.
IG: Vendetta fires into Stealer brood 2 with 2 plasma cannons and bolter, but misses and hits my Gargoyles instead. Stracken's squad fires into my Gargoyles. I lose about 4-5 models. Valkyrie comes in, shoots at my Tervigon. Lots of misses, 2 wounds saved from Venomthrope's cover save.
Our Turn 2:
SM: Contemptor Dreadnought drop-pod comes in - lands right next to Sternguard Squad. Fires into them, fails to hit all shots. Both flyers fail to come in.
One Scout squad with Missile Launchers blow off the Fire Prism's main gun.
Nids: Stealer Brood 3 casts Enfeeble on the Sternguard squad (fails it DTW), Stealer Brood 2 is having trouble clearing the trench and barely makes it into some tank traps instead.
Stealer Brood 1 moves along the trench closer to the Vendetta but I don't take the risk of charging it yet.
Hive Guards shoot at Sternguard squad (Valkyrie is out of range), fails to cause unsaved wounds.
Gargoyles move up to soak up more fire from Stracken's squad and the regular Catachans.
Tervigon spawns, but jams on a 5, 3, 3. Gants occupy the trenches. Tervigon casts Catalyst on Stealer Brood 3.
Between me and the SM player, I use Stealer Brood 3 to charge the Sternguard to soak up overwatch fire (they have a LOT of meltas). 2 stealers and the Broodlord get into combat - Broodlord challenges, Master of the Forge accepts.
Broodlord takes 1 wound from the Master's Servo Arms, but causes 1 rending wound in return. Stealers cause 1 unsaved wounds, take no wounds (due to enfeebled Sternguard being too weak! xD).
Contemptor then joins the fight (it has some rule that lets it charge the turn it comes in...) Whiffs its To Hits in combat.
Sternguard loses combat, player chooses to fall back, but Broodlord catches the unit. They remain locked in combat.
Orks: Ork boyz do better this turn - move forward 5-6". Get into range of several enemy Marine squads and the Catachan squad. Couple of shooting wounds here and there... The player declares a Waaagh! and charges Stracken's squad. All the Boyz fail their 7-8" charges. *facepalm*
Turn 3:
Enemy turn -
Eldar: Dark Reapers turn their fire on the Hive Guards as the IG Valkyrie closes in. 1 Hive Guard takes 1 wound, saves 2 cover saves. Fire Prism shoots at Hive Guards, kills 1 and causes 1 wound on my 2nd HG. Wave Serpent moves up to heavy weapons team to add firepower to Stealer Brood 4 (Telekine dome is putting in a LOT of work...) - I'm down to 2 models (BL + Stealer)
IG:
Valkyrie moves down the table. Shoots my Tervigon, fails to wound it (I make 1 Venomthrope cover save). He also tries to deploy Jump Troops, who scatter over his own base. A discussion later, we decide that the flyer's base doesn't count for a Mishap against friendly units and they deploy as normal.
Stracken and his Melta IGs change targets and shoots at the Ork Nobz moving up towards him; he kills 2-3 models.
Vendetta targets Stealer Brood 1 with plasmas/bolter. 1 Stealer lost to plasma - bolter hits but fails to wound.
Catachan Heavy Weapons and Wave Serpent change targets to the Scouts - they intend to kill the missile launchers before they can shoot down the Valkyrie. They kill all but 1 model, but he passes his Ld test.
Valkyrie goes off the table into Ongoing Reserves.
Iron Hands:
Iron Hands are focusing all their fire into the Ork Sluggas pushing up their flank. Targets another large gas tank, blows it up... and rolls 1".
Snipers are chipping away at the Sluggas - but the mob is too big so no Ld tests are taken for casualties. Dreadnought fails to wound again.
Sternguards, being Enfeebled, continue plinking away ineffectually at the Stealers and Contemptor. The sergeant with a power fist kills a stealer and wounds another, but because he's striking at S6 I make a successful FNP from the last turn, the Sternguard unit loses another 2 models to the Contemptor (Marines saved all my stealer normal wounds). Broodlord in the challenge rends the Master of the Forge to death. Marines get caught again after choosing to fail their morale test.
Our turn:
Nids: Hive Guard moves into trench to avoid further Reaper fire. Venomthrope moves with it. Stealer brood 2 (now just 1 broodlord with 1 wound) moves up behind Gargoyles. Gargoyles walk towards Catachan troops.
Stealer brood 1 clears the trenches aiming for the Vendetta.
Stealer brood 4 clears the trenches, aiming for the newly Deepstriked Catachans.
Termagants move along the trench behind the Ork nobz who have cleared the trenches, aiming for Stracken.
Hive Guard attempts to shoot down Valkyrie - fails to hit.
Tervigon casts Catalyst on Stealer Brood 2.
Gargoyles shoot at Stracken's group. Kills 1 model after a series of Look Out Sirs and Stracken saves/FNP. (I *DO* kills his medic so he loses his FNPs afterwards)
Stealer brood 2 & 3 attempt to cast Enfeeble on Sternguard, but they make 1 DtW.
Stealer brood 3 causes 1 more unsaved wound, but is wiped out by Techmarine servo arm attacks. Contemptor causes 2 unsaved wounds.
Gargoyles use Wings to charge Catachan infantry group - Uses Hammer of Wrath to cause 3 wounds, 1 unsaved. Broodlord makes an all-or-nothing charge and gets 11" on his charge (rerolled from a 6" roll with Fleet), contacts the Catachan infantry.
Stealer brood 4 (with Telekine Dome again) charges the drop troopers. Deflects 2 melta wounds and 1 lasgun wound with two 6es and one 5+ invul save !!!
Stealer Brood 1 charges Vendetta but only causes 1 glancing hit.
SM:
Storm Eagle and escort plane come in. Storm eagle opens fire on the Dark Reapers with Bolt-somethings and lascannons, and cause 2 unsaved wounds.
Scouts make some missile and sniper shooting at the Vendetta, but fail to damage it.
Contemptor Dreadnought causes 1 more wound in CC - only about 3 models left. (Combined with my stealer attacks above, battle was a draw)
Orks:
Ork Nobz move closer to the Catachan troops. They manage to make the charge, but don't get to fight as the Gargoyles and Broodlord kill, demoralize, catch and sweep the Catachan troops.
Ork Shootas stay in the trench and fire ineffectually. They're busy holding an objective.
Ork sluggas close in on the opponent's scouts taking the objective. They fail their 7" charge up the wall.
Turn 4:
Enemy turn -
Eldar: Dark Reapers turn their fire on the Ork Nobz, wiping out all but 3 models. They fail leadership and run. Wave Serpent moves over to get a better LOS on my Tervigon. It... fails to wound.
Maugen-Ra, not being attached, shoots at my Gargoyles and wipes them out using anti-cover-save rounds.
IG: Stracken shoots at the Nobz (contributing to the Dark reaper tally) Vendetta keeps backpedalling away from Stealer Brood 1 and shooting at them. Kills 3 of them.
Iron Hands: The Dreadnought and Tac marines finally kill enough Sluggas to force them to fail Leadership and run away.
Scouts snipe 1 Stealer and cause 1 unsaved wound on the Broodlord after the Vendetta is done shooting - I fail my Ld and get pinned. (out of Synapse)
Sternguard finally lose the battle. Contemptor consolidates behind the Drop Pod out of sight of the Catachan Heavy Weapons.
Heavy Weapons team kills Stealer brood 4 with lascannons and bolters.
Friendly Turn:
Nids - Tervigon moves, then runs into Synapse range of the pinned Stealers. They regroup.
Stealer brood 2 (Broodlord with 1 wound) successfully charges the Dark Reapers. No overwatch hits.
Stealer brood 1 (only the BL left) runs across the table to support Stealer brood 2. Rolls a +3 on Iron Arm.
Termagants clear the Trench, targeting Stracken's group.
Hive Guard shoots at Wave Serpent, fails to penetrate side armour.
Termagants charge Stracken - suffer 3 dead gants (opening up a 3" gap), but again make a ridiculous charge of 9" (formerly 6") and contact him. They cause no unsaved wounds.
SM -
Contemptor comes out from behind Drop Pod to target the repositioned Wave Serpent - shoots it and scores a pen + Immob result.
Because it moved flat out last turn, the immob result upgrades into a Wreck and causes its Dire Avengers to spill out into the trench.
* Point of Contention: The Wave Serpent apparently had some wargear that prevents the additional D3 effect from the Rending.
Orks - Ork nobz run away, Ork sluggas run away, but second slugga group fills the gap.
Turn 5:
Enemy turn -
Iron Hands: Only some models on the far side of the table take potshots at the Orks. The drop pod takes potshots at Stealer brood 1, but fail to wound.
Eldar: Dire Avengers cannot do anything (nothing to shoot at) - Dark Reapers locked in combat. Maugen-Ra challenges my Broodlord instead, I have to accept. We beat on each other, but nothing happens.
IG: Straken kills my gants while taking 1 more wound (he has 1/3 left). His Vendetta attempts to shoot at my Broodlord, but a T8 BL is... hard to kill.
Valkyrie comes back onto the table, shoots down the Storm Eagle despite the Storm Talon in the way giving a 5+ save.
Friendly turn -
SM: Storm Talon tries to shoot down Valkyrie, but nothing happens. Scouts try to shoot at someone (don't remember) - nothing happens.
Orks: Ork Sluggas make the charge up the tower walls and overwhelm the Iron Hands scouts. They consolidate into the objective.
Nids: Stealer broodlord 1 charges (rerolls distance) into the engaged Dark Reapers. Stealer brood 2 Broodord scores 3 rending, 1 normal wound on Maugen-Ra, but he also scores several wounds and both are mutually killed.
Broodlord 1 kills all but 1, who runs away. I fail to sweep, so I consolidate into the Objective instead.
End result:
Friendly survivors:
Nids - 1 Broodlord, 1 Tervigon (5 wounds!), 1 Hive Guard, 1 Venomthrope.
Orks - 1 Big Mek, about 12 Sluggas, 18 or so Shootas
SM - 1 Stormtalon, 1 scout (1 unit), 2 scouts (1 unit), 1 Contemptor
Opponents:
Iron Hands - 1 tac squad, 1 dreadnought, 1 sniper squad, 1 drop pod
IG - 1 Valkyrie, 1 heavy weapons squad, 1 Stracken
Eldar - 1 retreating Dark Reaper, 1 Dire Avenger squad, 1 toothless Fire Prism. (strangely he didn't bother with it after its main gun blew off - probably didn't want to give us the VP)
Objectives held:
Us - 3.
Them - 0.
VPs:
Line breaker - Both teams
First blood - Us
Slay the Warlord - 1 for us (Maugen Ra), 1 for them (Master of Forge in Storm Eagle)
Heavy Support killed - None!
Final observations:
1) The Wave Serpent's demise wouldn't have affected the result - all viable targets were already locked in combat.
2) The Broodlords winning the battle against the Dark reapers/Maugen Ra (who wasn't attached) helped score 1 objective
3) The ridiculous charge distances I rolled were incredibly lucky, and probably helped me contest that Obective.
4) With enough bodies on the table, the opponents prioritized the Genestealers, but left the Orks free reign.
5) A lot of bad dice rolls resulted in a lot of the opponents' failed hits/wounds, and dead enemy models.
6) Night fighting definitely saved my Stealers' hides in the first turn!
7) The orks also managed a last-minute push onto the third objective, earning a decisive victory.
8) 1k points for a poorly equipped Eldar army expecting Marines was the Eldar player's downfall.
9) Iron Arm + Telekine Dome is a ridiculous combo if you can roll that. xD Bouncing 3 wounds back into an Overwatching unit was... pure gold.
10) Never got to use my Objuration Mechanicum; Vendetta with rear AV11 was too hard to crack as my Broodlord was always out of range (too many stealers in front...).
11) For some reason my Tervigon never saw much combat; after it rolled doubles on spawning the opponents ignored it. However, the Synapse-range regroup ruling gave my Broodlord the much needed distance to charge the Eldar group.
12) Mixing two body-heavy horde armies together gave us the edge - the opponent simply didn't have enough guns to kill us ALL even when our big guns failed to arrive until turn 3.
