So a while ago I posted an army list I was going to use for an escalation tournament between a couple of friends. I figured since I followed some of your advice, I'd share the results of our first night. I will try to update when I can, we should be hosting one (mayyyybe two) nights a month.
Roughly, it was a 500 points list, standard FOC, on which we will be building up 250 points after each gaming night (maybe more when we'll get to higher point levels). We are only allowed to swap equipment for others of same value or to get better stuff for higher point cost. Every single model will have to stay until the end of the tournament. No flyers before 1000pts.
We also had to choose a warlord trait that will stick to our leader for the whole thing. I chose Master Tactician (I think it's the right wording) which allows me to reroll reserve rolls.
My list at 500 points:
Tyranid Prime - LW & BS, Deathspitter
Hive Guards x2
Tervigon (Troop) - AG, Cat
Termagants x14
Biovore x1
My opponents lists, or most of what I can remember, and a quick recap of the battles(in order of encounter):
Eldar
Farseer - Fortune, that eldar staff thingy
Guardians x10
Guardians x10
D-cannon
Wraithlord
This player was completely new to 40k, but he used to play mordheim with us a few years back, so he knows the basics. The game was pretty straight forward. I was able to lock the wraithlord in CC with my Prime and Hive Guards, while the tervigon and her babies swarmed the farseer and his squad. The D-cannon was quickly destroyed by the hive guards in turn 1, and the biovore managed to wipe an entire squad of guardians with one very well placed spore mine.
Imperial Guards
Compagny command squad - 4 grenade launchers
veteran squad x1- autocannon, Harker
veteran squad x1- meltagun, chimera
basilisk x1
Well here is where I learned how much the tervigon is a freaking beast. By the beginning of turn 3, I had lost my Prime, my hive guards, the biovore (damn you Basilisk!) and Spawny the tervigon had run out of bugs. The IG had lost Harker and some vets (thanks again to the biovore). With only one squad of termagant holding my 3 objectives (they ended up getting shot a lot by the artillery, but miraculously survived to hold one while in IB), I charged forward with the tervigon and another squad of badly wounded termagants (3 of them, to be exact). I was able to kill the two vet squads and won while sitting on one of his objectives. A real close call.
Sisters of battle
HQ dude (can't remember)
Sisters x10
Sisters x10
Seraphim x5
Retributor x5 - heavy bolter
Not much to say. I had more objectives on my side, sniped the heavy bolter, and swarmed the outflanking sisters/HQ. Too bad I miscalculated (forgot he had first blood) and ended up moving some termagants off an objective. Game was a tie.
Dark eldar
HQ dude
Venom x1
witches x5 - net and something else
witches x5 - net and something else
Raider x1
Ravager x1
I don't understand what he tried to do. Probably panicked. He deployed at the very edge of the board, trying to kill me with his 4 lances and 12 venom shots a turn. Didn't work. By the end of turn 4, I was in his face with everything but my tervigon and biovore who both stayed on my objective. He was swarmed by everything else, plus the 42 termagants, yes 42, that the tervigon spawned. Pretty brutal at 500 pts.
Blood Angels
Librairian
Assault marines x5
Assault marines x5
Baal pred - TL assault cannon
Predator - autocannon
I faced everyone but the Blood Angels guy, which will be my first opponent in the 750pts night.
I'm glad to say that I came up on top of everyone, with 3 wins and 1 tie. We calculated differentials just for fun (total of point gaps in every game, + if you win, - if you lose) and I stand proudly with a +16, followed by the Sisters with +4.
Our next night is scheduled on the 19th. I gotta come up with something worth 250 points and had a lot to think about. I decided to wait on the next tervigon, although I might regret it since it's a safe bet. Here's what I'll be adding, unless I change my mind, which will probably happen:
1 hive guard
2 termagants + giving devourers and a pod to the squad
1 zoanthrope (can't afford a pod, but is the priority with another zoan. Also, I need synapse, and the blast vs marines is pretty much the only thing scary i've got)
the rest will be split at the last minute between TS for the tervigon, more termagants or TS on the Prime
Thoughts and comments appreciated!
