Building an 1850 list for the Nova Open

I attended the Nova Open last August/September, my first big time tournament, and learned very quickly the importance of having lots of troops. Table quarters always seemed to be a deciding factor either as the primary, secondary or tertiary goal. It was easy to tie on the other goals most of the time and then I would loose to the table quarters - I ran Necrons with only three units of warriors...

So, in preparation for next years I read through the draft primer for 2013's tournament. Again three of the first six games have table quarters as one of their goals. With that in mind I'm thinking of developing a list that has a good chance of winning at the table quarter level and objective holding. I'm looking at Tyranids as a possible new army for me and wanted to get some informed ideas from the group here about what type of list would work well. I'm thinking I would need close to 1k worth of troops out of the 1850 available points.

We have the best Troops choice there is. Tervigons. And the best is that they poop out more troops as the game proceeds...

You can see a couple of 1850 lists here right now, mine for instance. I'll play that list in the Nova 2013 format 28/12. I can give you feedback afterwards if you like.

I was looking at the Tervigon's however one of my super powers is the ability to roll doubles on 3 dice. I tried rolling it out and on average two Tervigons produced around 25-30 gaunts which is a lot but...

I definitely don't want to look at your list then - don't want to be a copy cat!

If you want to play nids competitively I don't see a way avoiding the lovely Tervigons. The pooping is a big thing but not by far the only major benefit they have.

One other aspect of nids in 6th is the abundance of psychic powers. My opinion is that you should use this advantage to its maximum.

Actually that was the two big things I was looking at: #1 - psychic powers. I've been on the receiving end of telepathy and biomancy powers and it's definitely no fun. #2 - tervigons pooping troops. It's actually very reminiscent of my beloved scarabs/spiders but better (cause guants are troops).

But still I think you'd need to have around 40% of your 1850 tied up in troops in order to win table quarters reliably at Nova. The winner last year had closer to 60% of his points tied up in scoring units.
