swarmy, flyrant, and guard switching

so this weekend i played in a tourny. in the final round i came up against Tau and he stole initiative. first turn he promptly blew my gliding flyrant off the board.

this got me thinking. im also running a swarmlord with guard can i use the guard for both swarmy and the flyrant.

basically 2 ideas.
1) attach the flyrant to the swarmy and guard group turn one. if i go first i can detach the flyrant. if they sieze he is safer, then i detach on my turn.
2) if 1 isnt possible can i keep the flyrant attached to the guard, detach from guard on my first movement phase and have swarmy attach to guard in that phase.

Don't have the codex or FAQ with me here, but I think you can't detach a Tyrant or Swarmlord from their guard unit.
Also I'm pretty sure a group of Tyrant guards can only be joined by one Tyrant or Swrmlord.

So, as far as I know, no to both.

You do not have to have the guard attached, and the wording explicitly states a tyrant or swarmlord *may* attach as an IC. Merely having a tyrant unlocks the option to field a guard. They're not attached to a specific tyrant. Only problem you can't leave the guard once you've joined, so the flyrant would be stuck with a footslogging guard.

The codex covers question 1.

A single tyrant can join, not 2. Though you could purchase an additional guard for your flyrant as a separate unit.

The FAQ covers question 2.

You can't leave once joined. You also, as of the 2nd latest update, must join during deployment, not later. Though you could take a guard and decide whether to join based on who is deploying first and how scared you are.

yea i reread my codex when i got home and realized 1 was not possible, but i didnt think to search the FAQ for 2. good catch jabber.

the problem with your suggestion is that once i put a guard with the flyrant his wings are useless.

i ran into this problem because of a mixture of unlucky circumstances. i deployed first with first turn and he seized. we drew the table that had 3 small pieces of 5+ cover area terran that werent in either deployment zone and the 4+ cover wasnt tall enough to cover MCs. he was Tau which are masters of long range shooting and we rolled hammer and anvil deployment.

it wasnt too bad i only lost my flyrant, i still tabled him at the bottom of turn 5. i was just trying to think of a way to prevent it.

Well if he doesn't have a lot to target, then the Guard won't slow you down as it will die right away.

You might also try deepstriking, so you come in as you have other units in his face at the same time.

Obviously having the initiative siezed is pretty nasty, sometimes you just have to grin and bear it.

Deepstriking isn't terrible since the swarmlord all but guarantees turn 2 arrival, and I've seen it generally ruled that you can count as swooping coming in from a deepstrike, though honestly I haven't checked up on it recently since I rarely DS.

If I'm running a solo Flyrant, the I always reserve him turn one to keep just that from happening. He almost always comes in T2 due to Swarmlord or HC

don't sweat it.You were playing on a table that was not following the rules for appropriate terrain. (planet bowling ball) and playing against Tau. I am impressed you won.

yea turn 2 won the game for me. in tunr 1 after he shot my flyrant down i made it into cover with everything else and fully buffed up; while popping a devilfish and killing 65% ish of his marklight squad.

turn 2 dropped DoM (which hit 3 different units), tyrgon, and 2 pods with 11 devilgants right into his front lines. the good thing about this deployment is when DoM drops in he is in range of almost everything because they always deploy way back and cram everything in.
