1850 List

Hey, Hive! Heard word of a local 1850 tourney in late January and I've been looking at adding to my small collection to get there. Here's the list I'm thinking of at the moment:

HT: TL Devs, LW&BS, Old Adversary
1 Zoan
1 Lictor
3 Warriors: ST, Devs, VC
3 Warriors: ST, RC
3 Warriors: Deathspitters, Spore w/Cluster spines
Terv: Crushing claws, 3 powers, cluster spines
20 Termagants: Devs, spore
14 Hormagaunts: AG&TS
20 Gargoyles: AG&TS
Carnifex: ST, Bio plasma
Trygon Prime

I know this list isn't perfect, but I'm still working on slowly adjusting a 3rd edition list to 6th and don't want to spend too much too fast. As it is, I just bought the terv and gaunts, and am bidding on 20 assembled dev gaunts. If I don't win that I'll have to buy a couple more new boxes, and maybe some of the snap-fit ones.The only other thing I don't have at the moment is the Trygon.

Can a prime join the warriors deploying via Spore? I'm never sure about ICs and reserves. If so, I might add a prime and drop the trygon prime to a regular trygon, and maybe lose some warriors or the lictor. That said, I hesitate to add him because I'd probably need to pick up a new tyrant; my current tyrant is a 2nd ed who would be my Prime.

I know people tend to run more zoans in a pod, but 1.) I don't have more, and 2.) I'm thinking I want to limit the number of reserves I have, though I could see giving the Warriors' spore to the Zoan; I tend to lean toward swarms, and want to provide plenty of expendable targets for the first turn or two. As it is, if it wasn't for the Terv pooping gants, I'd be a little concerned about not having enough on the board to start.

To answer your question about the prime, it has been FAQ'd that they are not allowed to join units in mycetic spores. I think it's a dumb rule, but whatever.

A couple things about your list...is your Carnifex magnetized? A close combat-oriented Fex with bioplasma costs nearly the same as a vanilla trygon, and is far inferior. If you can, I would give it 2 pairs of devourers, as this setup lets it blast away and still be decent in close combat. Also, I'm not sure what 1 lictor is going to do...you really need to run them in groups of 3 to have much effect, and even then they are a tricky unit to use well. Also, warriors are very susceptible to ID in this edition, so don't expect them all to survive and hold objectives at the end of the game. The barbed strangler is a better weapon than the venom cannon IMO, and cheaper to boot.

I know the feeling coming from 3rd to 6th, I had a lot of new stuff to buy/trade for. Try to get a few games under your belt before the tourney to see how everything works out.

Thanks for the input, Brian. No, the fex isn't magnetized and it's a WYSIWYG tourney (granted, I play that way anyway). It kind of depends on what I get for Christmas, but if I can I might drop him completely. I also am working on converting my 3rd ed tyrant to a flyrant and will magnetize him once I do - tore the arms off yesterday, which probably hurt me more than it hurt him.

I might run two trygons if I can get my hands on them and assemble them in time.

As far as the warriors, I've seen their vulnerability to ID in the few games I've played. They're the same deal as the 'fex, all glued. That said, I could see dropping some if I get something else to fill their points, and my game plan isn't exactly hinging on them, though they could help screen my tyrant.

I do have more lictors (somewhere) that I could run. I was half envisioning him as a glorified homing beacon for my reserves if they hold until turn 3 (assuming he comes in turn 2). Of course, I'm not terribly worried about missing my target too much, though fitting 20 gants out of a pod can be tough. On that note, might also swap OA for HC on the tyrant.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm hoping to get some games in to playtest and get a better feel for this list (and 6th ed), but my time is pretty limited (considering I've played 3 games since August). Hopefully some time off around the holidays will help.

Ok, reworked the list in response to an early Christmas windfall:

HT: LW&BS, TL Devs, HC
2 Lictors
Doom: Spore with cluster spines (or TL DS)
20 Devilgants: spore with TL DS
Terv: CC, 3 powers, TS, AG
15 Hormagaunts
3 Warriors: ST and Devs, Venom Cannon
3 Warriors: ST and DS
10 Gargoyles: TS & AG
Trygon: TS
Trygon Prime: TS
Biovore

I like the idea of having 2 Trygons, but I'm starting to worry about lack of bodies turn 1 (assuming I deep strike with both trygons). That said, I would expect/hope for at least 3, if not 4 of the reserved units to come in turn 2 and, with the exception of the Lictors, all should be extremely disruptive.

Turns out the tourney is mid-February now, so I'm liable to change this up more: plans for further acquisition would be more gants (have 16 FB, 36 in the box), a second terv, and a plastic tyrant kit to maybe make a flyrant. Thoughts on those and/or the list?

Looks like you probably have enough units still on the table even if you deep strike both trygons. This looks like a better list than the first one...I would give it a try and see how it goes. As far as more units, a second tervigon is a solid buy. I haven't played a game of 6th without 2 in my list. A Flyrant is also a solid choice, if you decide to give it 2 pairs of brain leech devourers. A fairly simple conversion, or you can use the fleshborer hive from your tervi/tfex kit like I do!

Just a quick question,

What is the benefit of adding TS to high strength models (trygon)? I know that they wound on a 4+, but isn't it rare to find a model with 7 toughness to worry about needing to roll something higher than a 4 anyways?

It allows you to re-roll to wound if your strength is equal to or higher than the toughness of your target. So, if I hit something and need a 3+, I can re-roll any 1s and 2s.

I thought Rerolls was for scything talons only?
