Hello Hive,
Had a big battle yesterday against my buddy who was trying out the Blood Angel book. We went ahead and played a 3000 point game to give us a chance to play some stuff that normally doesn't make it onto the table. If you are interested, here is my last tournament army thetyranidhive.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tyranidlists&action=display&thread=41425

Librarian Dread
Mission: The Scouring
Deployment: Hammer and Anvil
Table Sides: Blood Angels get the high ground
Deployment:
Without knowing how many points the objectives are worth, and knowing that most of my army is in reserves, I made a plan to just ignore the objectives in my zone and head for the enemy hill. The picture above is taken after the Tyranid deployment just as the Blood Angels are setting up... so that's why it looks like their stuff is kind of all over. Anyway, the Tyranids put Swarmlord, Hive Tyrant, Tyranofex, Tervigon, Hive Guard, and Biovores on the table. Everything else is reserved.
Turn 1:
BLOOD ANGELS SEIZE THE INITIATIVE... and immediately do this:
So they kill my biovores before I get a chance to use them, and they get FIRST BLOOD. I really really hate the SEIZE THE INITIATIVE special rule, because it seems like it happens about once every two games, but I'm resolved to fight through it this time. Tyranids advance on the right flank behind the buildings, the Hive Guard manage to blow up the Librarian Dread on the hill, and the Tyrannofex, Tervigon, and spawned Gaunts head over to deal with that tactical squad.
Turn 2:
Blood Angels reserves come in, and a Storm Raven flies into the middle of the battle. Shooting takes its toll this turn, and the Flyrant gets grounded on the first squad that shoots at it, and then barely survives the Devestator Fire by making 2 FNP roles. I feel like if he wouldn't have taken out a couple of missiles in turn one, he would definately have been killed that turn. Tyranid reserves come on except for the Zoanthropes and the Y-stealers, and take up occupancy in the enemy deployment zone. Shooting take out the Devs in the building, a rhino, a tactical squad. The Flyrant assaults the remaining dev squad. The Tyrannofex and tervigon shoot and assault that drop pod squad, but only kill about half... the librarian making 2 terminator invul saves to stay alive. The swarmlord tries to cut off Mephiston.
Turn 3:
Blood Angels bring on an outflanking Baal Predator, and have template fun going after a squad of devourer gaunts. Yeah... that was effective. Assault terminators arrive and deep strike near the drop pod squad to lend their support. Mephiston casts Wings of Sanguineous, and jumps over to assault the carnifex, dragging him into the warp with one mighty swing of his force weapon despite shadow. The Storm Raven flies across the battlefield dropping dreadnaught and death company jump pack marines along the way. Meanwhile, the terminator Librarian causes a wound to the Tervigon and pulls him into the warp despite shadows....
On the Tyranid turn, the Y-stealers show up and quickly end the Baal Predator Threat. The swarmlord once again tries to corner Mephiston, making sure he's got warp speed up at all times to strike first. The Flyrant, somehow still alive after killing all those devestators, flys off after the Storm Raven and kills some death company. Gaunts and Gargoyles spread out to claim objectives. The board is now almost completely flipped from deployment, with Tyranids in the BA deployment zone, and vice versa.
Turn 4
Unfortunately, I forgot to take any more pictures after that, but the highlights after this point was Zoanthropes dropped in near the new enemy stonghold, not really intending to kill anyone, but more just to make sure the enemy spent time killing them and couldn't get back to the more expensive objectives. The Flyrant also went that way and managed to take some more shooting before dying. The Swarmlord got into good position to cut off enemy forces trying to claim objectives, and managed to kill the Assault Terminators, although predictably Mephiston took advantage of that opportunity to go pull a Trygon Prime into the warp...
Probably the biggest highlight of the game, although a little anticlimatic, was what happened the turn after mephiston capped the Trygon. Even though he managed to pull his second Tyranid MC into the warp, the combat left him too close to the swarmlord who promptly got to grips with him and managed a warlord battle. So... Mephiston went into the warp at the Initiative 8 step, without even getting to attack.
In the end, the Tyranids held a 4 points objective, and secondary objectives of Slay the Warlord, and Linebreaker, plus they killed a Baal Predator for a total of 7 points. The Blood Angels held a 3 point objective, had First Blood, Linebreaker, and killed a squad of gargoyles for a total of 6 points.
TYRANID VICTORY: 7 to 6
LESSONS LEARNED:
- I miss eternal warrior. I lost tyrannofex, Tervigon, Carnifex, and Trygon to the force weapons of the enemy. The force weapons that give +S were especially worrisome since they wounded my MCs more often.
- I love Spore Pods. This type of army is fun to play, and so far has seemed very overwhelming.
- Tyranofex = not that good against marines. I had the perfect scenario, bunched up marines, hit them with 2 templates and a large blast, and only killed like 2 guys... meh, I'm ripping his arms off and making another Tervigon. I needed some extra tarpit and scoring units anyway, so that will probably be better overall.
- Zoanthropes and Biovores = not evaluated. The biovores just gave up an easy kill point, even though they were well hid, and the Zoanthropes stayed in reserve so long they couldn't really contribute. I normally don't play those units in 2000 points, and only put them in to try it out, so I'm not really in a hurray to paint them now.
