1000pts vs. Imperial Guard RESULTS AND REPORT

Right guys, so I am playing my second 6th edition game tomorrow against a 1000 pt Space Marine army... And I want to do a little bit better than last/first time! (lost 10pts to 5... Most of my points came from my DoM and Spore). He will definitely have at least two rhinos and a vindicator.

This is what I have available:

5x rippers with spinefists (with or without flying- winged rippers removable)
5x Warriors with DS, one with BS

5xSky slashers with Spinefists (see above)

Heavy:
Carnifex with two twin linked devs
Trygon

So I have quite a bit to choose from- Terv spawns aren't an issue as there is a box of them in store for that purpose, just wondering what to go for! I can't decide! The only dead cert is the DoM/Spore and Hive Guards- they were great last time... I love Tervs, but all they did last time was give the opponent easy killpoints... Suggestions fire away!

I just played a 1k game against Sm with this:

HQ:
Flyrant, 2 TL Devs

Troops:
Tyranid Warrior x3 (Devs + 1 BS)
Hormagaunts x 20

Heavy:
T-fex (Acid Spray)
C-fex, 2 TL Devs + Mycestic Spore

You could use your Trygon in the slot where I had the T-fex. That, coupled with the list above, would make for a very fast moving army which is something you need with Tyranids. The sooner you get into CC with them, the better.



The Flyrant led the Hormagaunts around to the left flank of the battle, while the T-fex charged straight in, supported by the Warriors (who hid behind his sizable girth). Once the Flyrant had gotten to battle in turn 2, I deep striked the Dakkafex near a squad of 6 Grey Knights and caught them in the cross-fire between the Dakkafex and the Flyrant--putting 24 TL S6 shots on them. They died.

I used the Horms to tie up some of the stronger characters and let the Dakkafex and Flyrant plug away at them.

The T-fex didnt see much battle, but his presence helped to steer the battle in my favor. The 2+ save and W6 on the T-fex made my opponent target other units on the field--The Flyrant and the Horms.

In retrospect, the T-fex/Warrior Brood was a bit vulnerable, and had my enemy decided to target the warriors, it may have been a different game.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this list if you want to use it.

Were they vehicle heavy? What did you use as a can opener?

No vehicles other than a few bikes, but anything with 2 TL BL Devs is going to do you well. With so many S6 shots, and re-rolling misses, you're going to get some hits. You can get the C-fex or Flyrant into CC to do some carnage too. The Trygon will do well too. If you need some more traditional can openers, cash in the Trygon or T-fex for HG and Zoans. The Zoans are great, and if you keep their original powers, you get a template and a super stong lance attack--they will give you extra synapse too.

My opponent was playing an illogical army and had GK and demons, and I had no problem with either.

Any suggestions from anyone else?

At the moment I'm thinking maybe Flyrant, Prime, Warriors, Hive Guard, DoM+Pod, Devilgants, Tervigon and then seeing how many points I have left...

Definitely Doom and Hive Guard. Flyrant is expensive, only really worth it if you're diving into CC/ covering fast units with synapse... It's still a really fun model to play and look at.

Right, so this is what I've decided on:

Whaddya reckon? Lacking in the Heavy arena... but was too expensive to fit anything in... unless I remove the Tervigon and another warrior to fit a Trygon? Only five minutes before I pack up and go!

I hope it went okay... The worst thing that you'll have to deal with is a Land Raider, but hopefully the tervigon/flyrant got into CC with it and tied it up/destroyed it...

Otherwise it looks like a sound list, although I'm not a fan of devilgants myself.

BATTLE REPORT

So I got there... And I was up against a different guy because the Marine guy was busy with customers... Imperial Guard... Even MORE frigging tanks! Two Leman Russ, a Chimera and another transporty one I didn't know the name of holding his warlord... Plus two of those guns on MC bases... Plus loads of infantry units. Tyranids were out-hoarded... But I took the challenge, rolled for warlord trait- the Prime was my warlord, as with his Warriors he had more 'wounds' than the Flyrant, and that split the focus of the fire somewhat as the Flyrant was bound to be targeted. Prime became a scoring unit. Which meant I had some really nice options there. Rolled for psychic powers, Enfeeble and Haemorrhage on the Flyrant and Iron Arm on the Tervigon. This came in very useful later.
Mission: The Scouring. Objectives were placed, and the scenery was a lovely Salisbury village with some rather cross middle class living in the cottages, angry that aliens were ruining their town, mumbling under their breath that they were born here and something disparaging about benefits. Much fluff was had.
So- the game.
Turn 1- Tervigon spawned twelve little dudes, and got Iron Arm +2. Flyrant swooped straight down the middle of the field and got all up in the guards' grill. The Hive Guards moved down the right hand side, whilst the newly born Termagants huddled behind a cottage to hold an objective. The Prime led the warriors to the left, surrounded by Devilgaunts, to reach another objective before the guards got a chance. Shooting was fantastic. The Hive guards, between them, demolished the Chimaera giving me first blood and a fast attack death extra point. Two nil to me. It also blew up and took with it a lowly infantry man. The Flyrant then could open up twelve twinlinked shots at the gun crew. All but the gun itself was destroyed. The gun fled. Off the board. A resident of a nearby cottage tried to convince his wife that he was sure he had just seen a bunch of men push a cannon into a ravine and leap in after it. His wife told him to stop being silly and eat his Brainleech worms, and how the big flying one outside was telling her that his son was at Oxford, and how he would love to meet their Jessica- they could really hit it off.
Guards' turn:
Everything shot at the Flyrant. 54 dice. One caused a wound. Facepalms were made whilst the villagers tutted at the rain of missed bullets destroyed their petunias. The warlord's vehicle sauntered over to the left to meet my Warriors and Devilgants, surrounded by some infantry. They fired, and I lost a Termagant. We mourned his death and vowed revenge.
Turn2- A three was rolled. A spore landed. It scattered, but only a couple of inches. The Doom entered into the midst of the infantry. Another 7 termagants... But poofed out with a double two. Oh well. Sent them backwards to hold another objective, whilst moving the Tervigon in range so that he could Stinger Salvo the infantry. The Guards followed in his wake, to be well in range of the Leman Russes. The Warriors carried on forwards, and the Devilgants spread out around the objective. The Flyant swooped over a Russ and knocked off a Hull Point as it did so, and got in range to face its side armour. Spread the back right Termagants out towards the Tervigon so they stayed in Synapse and would stay by the objectives no problem. Shooty time. To start with, Doom sucked two wounds out of the infantry squad, whilst the Devilgaunts and Spore picked off most of the rest. The others fled. The Flyrant destroyed one of the Leman Russ, whilst the Hive Guards began to chip away at the other. The Tervigon Salvo'd the infantry and they be'd dead. Well, three were. The others survived to fight on another turn.

Guard's Turn2- Another thirty shots at the Flyrant. He took another wound. The Warlord's tank tried to kill the Doom, and took off a wound. He, however gained many more back from them with his leech and ended the phase with 9 wounds and thus strength nine. Another Termagant, however, fell along with two Warriors. The Prime began to sweat... His extra wounds were dropping... The Tervigon took a bunch of shots from the infantry... None wounded due to his amazing +3 Iron Arm. Ended the turn with my most casualties so far... But when they's only three can't complain.

Turn3- Moved Tervi, Hive Guards and spread Terms out forwards. Landed the Flyrant right behind the last Leman Russ. Spread out the Warriors and Prime to capture more objectives with the Warlord trait. Shooting Phase. Flyrant destroyed the rear armour of the Leman Russ, and the Hive Guards and Tervi salvo'd and impaled the infantry team to oblivion. Two men remaining of the gun squad remained over there. The now strength ten Doom charged the rear armour of the Warlord's tank. Destroyed it. It exploded. The Doom escaped unscathed, but some sardines were fried in the escape. The warlord survived, however. Now all that was remaining of the Guard's team was a warlord, three infantry with him, and two infantry facing the triple threat of Flyrant/Tervi/Guard.
Guard Turn- The Doom killed two infantry with leech. The Warlord's infantry team fired at my Prime's unit. The last warrior died, the Prime took a wound, but the last infantry also had a plasma gun explode in his face and died. The Warlord was alone. The gun squad fired at the Flyrant. Nothing happened.
Turn 4- The Spore's ripper tentacles and deathspitter, and a Prime Deathspitter all fired at the Warlord who magically survived the leech. He did not survive this attack however. Warlord point to me- score now three nil. Moved the Devilgants forward to an objective, their old one now being held by the Prime. Fired twelve shots from the Flyrant, four from the Terv, and four from the guards, all at the gunmen. They died a bit. The guards were wiped out entirely. I had taken four warriors and three Devilgaunts worth of casualties.
I ended with:

He ended with: 0

Victory to Nids, 13-0 plus complete wipeout. Huzzah!
