Hello,
I'm heading to a tournament tomorrow and trying my hand at a reserve-based army. The theme for this army is "surrounded" and essentially I'm trying to take advantage of all the different ways that Tyranids have to get into close combat. I am going to try to win, but honestly I know there are some suboptimal choices in here, but limited by time and model availability so it will have to do. I'll try and do a battle report after.
I've got 4 units in pods, including an MCs and a Doom, so they should be competing for attention after landing. Other than that I have 9 total units, meaning that up to 5 of them can be reserved. This puts my total model count starting on the board as low as 6 (technically I could outflank the rippers and start the tervigon if I wanted to have only 4 models on the board) and I'm feeling like the initial stage of deciding how much to put in reserves is going to be a big deal. I have the option of starting most things on the board if it looks like I could get tabled quickly. But with potentially 9 units dropping in on turn 2, most of which are immune to mishaps (4 pods, 2 trygons, 1 outflanker, and 1 dormant) all arriving on a 2+, I think this could hit pretty hard.
I also like that I don't really have a lot of duplicate units. The army is visually pleasing since I have everything from the smallest Ripper to the largest Trygon, and everything in between. The main thing I'm worried about is the synapse, so that's why I'm going to try and be very conservative with the Tyrant, why I'm keeping dominion on the Tervigon, and why I dropped some gaunts to upgrade a Trygon to a prime. I'll try and place him carefully so he won't get too shot up, but I'm sure he'll attract plenty of attention. Also, plan to put objectives in terrain in case I have to rely on lurking gaunts in the end.
ON THE TABLE
265 = Tyrant with armored shell, hive commander, double devourers
60 = Tyrant Guard x1
30 = Rippers x3
50 = Hive Guard x1 (hiding)
RESERVES:
160 = Tervigon (outflank)
104 = Gargoyles x13, toxin, adrenal (deep strike)
161 = Y-stealers x7 (dormant)
200 = Trygon x1 (deep strike)
240 = Trygon prime x1, toxin (deep strike)
130 = Doom of Malan'Tai in pod (deepstrike)
180 = Gaunts x14 with devourers in pod (deepstrike)
180 = Gaunts x14 with devourers in pod (deepstrike)
230 = Carnifex x1 w/double devourer in Pod (deepstrike)
