a quick batrep for my game vs. dave's orks last wenesday.
my list was 1k on the nose:
chaos lord on a bike, power maul, mark of khorne, sigil of corruption, veterans of the long war
X4 CSM bikes, X2 melta, champ with melta bombs, MoK, veterans
X10 CSM, X2 melta, veterans, rhino
X10 CSM, X2 melta, veterans, champ has a combibolter, rhino
havok X5, X4 autocannon
havok X5, X4 autocannon
aegis defense line w/ quadgun
dave's list was two units of buggies, a 5 or 6 strong bike squad, three looted wagons full of boyz w/ a nob each, warboss w/ big choppa in one of those wagons, and three units of 9 or 10 lootas.
we set up terrain, rolled off, picked sides, etc. mission came up the scouring (six objectives with hidden points values, fast attack is scoring and counts as extra VP if killed) that comes with Linebreaker, Slay the Warlord, and First Blood.
we were playing at the other FLGS, and while it was much smaller it was much more comfortable (other place is huge, but the wargaming area is in the back and exposed to heat/cold/(please do not swear) ventilation). we'll definitely be making this place our out of home gaming place (though i still prefer to play at home so i can chug coffee/beer/rum/etc). we had a nice mix of well built terrain with ruins, hills, and forests (including a 3 story ruin).
deployment was dawn of war. we rolled for nightfighting, didn't happen. i deployed my aegis line in the center of my area, with a squad of havoks in it. the other havok squad was in the top of the 3 story ruin. the havok squad in the middle had his field of view somewhat compromised by terrain placement after the fact (you put fortifications down first, then place terrain. we always alternate placement) but i still had a decent shooting position. one rhino to the left of my aegis, one to the right. bikes on the right behind the rhino.
dave deployed his lootas in ruins on my left, on my right, and one in a large piece of area terrain/forest in the middle. buggies were hidden behind buildings on the left and right, along with each looted wagon (warboss on right, one behind the forest, other squad on left). bikes were behind the forest in the middle.
objectives were placed, i had three in my backfield, dave had three in his. i got the 4 pointer, a 2 pointer, and the 1 pointer. he had also just picked up the GW objective pack, which, funny enough, is what this was for.
i won the toss to go first, and moved forwards aggressively. dave's boyz in the looted wagons were in small squad sizes, i was confident i would blow the hell out of them if i could pop the wagons and shoot them up before assaulting. if i got assaulted, eh, not so confident. orks is orks and they are good at bloodying noses.
chaos 1: after measuring, it was plain the bikes wouldn't be able to melta anything turn 1 so i moved them up, and later turbo boosted them into position (for cover more than anything else). rhinos i moved up, one to the left, one to the right along with the lord and the Sons of Anarchy MC, Eye of Terror Chapter. my havoks earned their VIP slot first turn by butchering the lootas on the left and the middle down to 1 model each (i gave that (please do not swear) some dakka. (please do not swear) love dakka). rhinos popped smoke. everyone made their morale tests.
orks 1: dave uses his lootas to good effect and i just kicked them square in the jimmy, so he wasn't exactly filled with a sense of girlish delight or child-like wonder. he moved his bikes around the terrain and forward, and brought the buggies and wagons around to shoot my havoks. i lost two AC havoks in the large ruins and one in the aegis line (ork bikes and buggies have tons of shots). lost the biker champion (failed LoS! roll, failed armor save). my bike squad was on a collision course for his warboss and wagon, with a rhino full of guys behind. on the left side, my rhino was barreling towards his lootas in the middle terrain.
chaos 2: i blew up the looted wagon with the warboss for first blood. blew up the other looted wagon, killing 6 orks and pinning the survivors. i immobilized and destoryed a gun on the middle wagon. killed half his lootas on the ruin to my right. however, things werent' exactly as rosy as it looks: i had planned to melta the warboss's wagon, then hose them with the aegis line and havoks before shooting and charging them with my lord and bikes. my CSM bolo'd their meltas, i had to kill it with the havoks and aegis line, only killing 1 ork in the explosion and leaving the warboss sitting in a crater with 10 pissed off boyz 4" from my bikers. not an optimal position to be in.
ork 2: his remaining lootas and the buggies pour fire into my rhinos, removing 2 hullpoints on the one on the right and shaking it in the process. he shoots and flamers the bike squad, putting a wound on the lord (combiflamer or w/e the orky equivalent is called on the warboss). he moves out of the crater (loosing a boy to dangerou terrain) and charges, and shoot the hell out of him in overwatch killing two iirc. the lord and the warboss go for the mano e mano (cannot recall who challenged first), with the rest of the boyz making it into combat with my other 3 bikes. i killed 3 (possibly 4, we were trying to get the assault rules down and in order and not paying attention and he placed his boyz in one pile, not keeping the overwatch/dangerous terrain casualties seperate) and put two wounds on the warboss. he put one wound on the lord and killed one biker. i won by two and he had lost enough boyz to loose fearless/mob rule, and the squad broke. the lord is I5, the bikes swept them and destroyed them. +1 VP for slay the warlord. consolidated back around to get a better firing position on the buggies next turn.
edit: the bikers/lord make their leadership test for counterattack when charged, and dave forgot to WAAAGGGGGHHHH at the start of his turn.
i know at some point during this turn i took the CSM on the truck to the right out; my notes say i had a truck shaken and lost 2 hullpoints but i'm pretty sure the rhino on the right was actually wrecked at this point; if not it happened on ork turn 3 but i had the guys out already and was preparing to rapidfire the orks when they murdered my lord and bike squad, but to everyone's surprise the lord and bikes applied boots to asses and pulled the win out of their hats.
chaos 3: aegis line havoks along with bikers killed the ork bike squad to the last man and the buggies to my right, +2 VP. dismounted CSM rapidfired into the loota squad in the ruins, killing only 1. CSM on the left got back into their truck and started to move back towards my backline to get into position to hunker on an objective.
ork 3: shooting from the buggies kills all but the havok champion in the ruins to my left. he moves the buggies down towards my backline, there was an opening in the ruin on the left that would give him line of sight to anything on the objectives there.
at this point the store was closing in 30 minutes. we examined the board and realized he couldn't win unless he tabled me. my bikes were in distance to grab the 4 point objective even if we ended on turn 4, the rhino was close enough to get the guys to the 2 point objective and get them out. this would leave me with 6 points for objectives, along with slay the warlord, linebreaker for my dismounted CSM squad on my right, first blood, and two VP for killing his bikes and the buggy squadron, total of 10 VP. he was only in position to grab one two point objective with his remaining squad of boyz from the wagon in the middle. we called the game at this point and started putting up our plastic doodsmen. chatting in the aftermath, he lamented the general nastiness of power armor armies and the 3+ save and that he simply wasn't used to that level of firepower (the other guy in our group, dwayne, his marines are, well, he's a work in progress though our last game was much better than normal and i rarely played my CSM in 5th after i taught dave to play and had absolutely horrid luck with them last two times i did play). bike CSM is win, and chaos lord w/ power maul is excellent as well. wounding most things on a 2 and striking at initiative makes up for AP4. if chainaxes were like this they'd be worth the points.
sorry for no pics, but we were on a time crunch. list seemed to play well, i was very pleased with it. CC is always welcome.
