6thED Game 2:What to do with the Gargs??

So after last weeks victory; the maiden voyage of my Tyranids this weeks session looms at the local club. Im not 100% sure what i will be playing yet but i have a feeling it might be Black Templars or some other power armoured force (such as CSM or B'Angels).

With this in mind i prepared a 1999pt army list for the game. In my last game i took ten gargs with no upgrades and pretty much wasted them.This time im taking twenty gargoyles and giving them upgrades, but im not really sure how best to use them? Any and all advice on Gargs or anything else is welcome!

Interesting list, very all round.

Good use of the termagant requirement from the troop tervi.

Look at your army against these three opponents:

IG Gun line. They castle, have AV14 and can bring S6 AP3 cover ignoring pizzas or Vendettas.

GK Palas. They are nigh impossible to wipe, have good all round armour and worst of all, they use force weapons against your MCs. So unless you have Iron Arm, close combat is uphill. Space Wolves fit in this category as well, as they are hard, but bring JotWW (make MC take I test = bye bye Tervi) and las

DE Flying show. DE are fast, really fast. Can you catch them flying around the board with a 5+ jink save. And they bring poison + AP2 weapons.

Gargoyles are nice, but you should use them to DS, shield another unit or as a saturation unit (have your opponent choose between them and another target). Gargoyles are dangerous to single models or weak infantry. They can swarm targets and with shooting and assaulting they can really bring some hurt fast.
At 160 pts, they are a good choice for forcing your opponent into shooting them instead of other (more valuable in the hive minds eye's) targets.

Thanks alot for the feedback amareis, this is certainly food for thought... fortunately no one at the local club has Deldar or Grey Knights *phew* but still this has me thinking along more tactical lines.

As i have Hive Commander i was thinking of Outflanking the Gargoyles, in a co-ordinated reserves rush on turn two (hopefully i dnt roll two 1's like i did last game ) or alternatively using the gargs to cover the Flyrant and Outflanking the Hormagant swarm instead. As for targets i presume they would look for any infantry that are not in vehicles etc (unless its a rhino then the gargs could glance its rear).

Whats the deal with attacking foes who you cant technically hurt? Can we do that or would we not be allowed to assault/ be assaulted by them? Im wondering if the gribblies can tarpit dreadnaughts or command squads with characters...

Yes you can tarpit enemies.

And you can run-away when you want to by making a voluntary fall-back move where the enemy can consolidate. This is a special rule made for situations where you can't hurt the enemy you are locked in combat with.

Gargoyles are a fast attack choice,not a troop and thus can't be outflanked using the hive commander rule.

Your list is almost exactly the same as mine
I use the gargoyles as a screening unit, there cheap and fast and if they kill anything its a bonus.
I would just give them toxin sacs and keep them low on cost. Also do you need 20? The unit has a large footprint, 15 is enough in my experience. Also saves you some time moving these annoying top heavy models.

You could swap out the Doom for some Zoans, If there's AV14 you can keep the warp lance power. When there's a lot of infantry you can swap out your powers and maybe get some more supporting ones from the Rulebook. Just a thought.

I would personally consider dropping you DoM and your prime on that Trygon for a full squad of Biovores.


Don't underestimate they're value in being able to pummel your opponents from the beginning of the game (from out of LOS). Being shot at every turn, even though it's not a "strong" shot, gets annoying and they'll have to deal with your biovores.

Also, you won't have to wait for DoM to arrive to do anything, your biovores can do damage turn one. Along with this, failing IB tests isn't as bad for your feeding creatures, which most of your aggressive units are.

You can ALSO snipe sergeants and other unique models in units using the new barrage rules.

How do the nu rules allow you to 'snipe' with barrage???
Is that from centering the template on them?

That's got me thinking a little about Biovores. I've always liked them but one model costs (GW price) £25, for 45 points. That's almost the same price as my flyrant cost me, except in a game he's 260pts. That's not how I should approach this hobby I know, but it's a lot per model!

I guess there's nothing to stop you putting 3 in a bunker? They're just infantry. I can't think of any reason why you couldn't, that'd be pretty strong.
