Okay so when played, mind break trap exiles any number target spells, what exactly is counted as being a spell. One person told me only instants and sorcery's, another said it was all the cards. So for clarification what is a spell?

A good rule of thumb is if you can play a counterspell on it then it is a spell.

As far as I understand, a spell is any nonland card that has been played that turn. Hence why catch-all counter cards use the phrase "Counter target spell".

With exception to instants and sorceries, though, anything that is already on the battlefield is a "permanent" now, not a spell.

Which is why, if you can somehow survive, Emarkul, the Aeons Torn can be Oringed. Also, it can be blocked by creatures even of color. Because creatures are only "spells" when they are being cast.

Odd. I always considered it to be pretty easy to read the rules if you read the oracle text.
