Rules question on Hive Commander

I can't seem to find whether or not the bonus to your reserve roll from hive commander is only available when your tyrant is already on the table. Someone told me it doesn't count if the tyrant is off the board. Can anyone help me clarify that? Thanks.

As long as it is alive... when in reserves it is still alive.

It's a bit of a grey area in the codex and it isn't addressed in the FAQ. I think the tyrant would have to be on the table as it seems the fairest and I'm pretty sure a model has to be on the board for its rules to apply. If you are a hardcore gamer or are going to a tournament then I would contact GW and ask for their help, but other wise its yours and your opponents decision on the rule.

It only needs to be alive.

Plenty of HQs have rules affecting pre-game, deployment and reserves, especially since warlord traits can do it too.

I agree. As long as you Tyrant hasn't been reduced to 0 W, Hive Commander is in effect.
