Thinking of starting a tyranid army, advice needed

Hello fellow gamers!

I was planning on starting a tyranid army, i'm old to the hobby but had a break for some years and now i'm back.

I am wondering wich units and boxes to get first, i have checked the forums and I have a problem with deciding which units to start with. I was planning to buy a battleforce since it has some basic models and seams like a good start. I have in mind to convert the warriors to a prime and the other two into HG. But then I have a large problem with synapscreatures... I was thinking that I'd buy a tervigon also to increase synapscreatures and have a MC (love MCs).

The games will start at either 500 or 750

This would give me:

Prime
Tervigon
2x HG
8x genstealers (maybe use them as ymgrals)
16 hormagaunts
22 termagants (my friend donated some he had from Battle of Mcragge).

I dunno if it's a good start or perhaps i should invest in something else, would appreciate some help.

Well, that would give you a good start in terms of investment/initial start up. I say go for it. I'm not sure what your budget situation is but, if you are getting back into the hobby and just are trying to get started as soon as possible then go for it.

If you have more money and are going for a larger army, then get the Codex, decide what you'd like to do, and start with an army list. If the battalion works? Awesome! If it looks like you are only going to use 1/2 of the models, go for the first HQ and 2 Troops. 500-750 points really goes quick now.

I know I didn't give you a definite answer but, I hope that helps in terms of suggestions of thought anyway. Good luck and welcome back!

Well I have access to the codex and was have been looking around a bit. I was thinking of tervigon with termagantspawn, seams like a funny list with overwhelming my foes with horde after horde of bugs! I thougth the battle force was a good start, since i get gaunts of 2 types and some warriors to convert, the most uncertain use of models that comes from the BF is the genestealers since they've lost some of their goodness. And the way i look the BF models is worth it economical to, those three units I will focus on from the BF is more expensive to buy individually. As I have understood the hive guard is a pretty sweet unit now and I'd likely see some heavier armored veichles soon (my usual opponent is getting a defiler and have some other nasty veichles from the new chaos dex). So my army would be good to be a bit allround since he's trying diffrent builds and I'd like an army that is solid against the most threats.

So the focus would be on tervigons and gaunts and have a build around them, and then the HG conversions will fit in as antitank, prime as HQ so I can use the tervi to capture some objectives with my ongoing gauntspam.

Are the hormagaunts really usufull or are they wast of units? It would be a factor to buy BF or single boxes.

I love the reavners tough but as i read they're not top performers atm due to their cost and the newly added overwatch... Shame though.

That looks like a fine start.

You can actually put the extra guns from the termagants onto the hormies and just have more gants out of it, if you weight the bases a little (which you'll likely need to do anyway for hormies).

Hormies can still be an effective screen anyway, or you can just proxy them as gants anyway, particularly as you'll want an easy way to differentiate between broods once you start spawning.

Also, while the Genestealers have lost some viability in 6th, you can still use them as Ymgarl stealers.
Ymgarls are still very good and very scary.
