*I'm sure we've had this thread before but not in a fairly long while so -- since its winter and all - reading time!*

A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin
I've also been dipping into Fantasy and Science Fiction Extended Edition via my kindle on Amazon. Only 99p per month and released editions come out every two months (so £1.98 per edition) and yet you get a good few good quality short stories and novelettes to read through.

Great for sharing lists of the books you own with others, getting recommendations and reviews on new books to read (recommendations need you to enter in owned books of your own to improve accuracy); sharing reading lists and (my personal favourite) making a to read pile (which is great for dumping in all the names of books people suggest you should read so you dont' forget about them)

right now im catching up on my horus heresy with the new blood angels book, Im reading the last chancers for the 50th time, I have also just finished the priests of mars book (which i highly reccomend).

as for non-40k stuff I am reading The zombie survival guide, currently looking for a copy of WWZ.

I just finished a book called Fragment, an interesting science fiction novel about an Island in the pacific that was competely cut off so all lifeforms on the island evolved from prehistoric arthropods and crustacians. Imagine giant 50 ft long killer shrimp, starfish "ants" that move by rolling or crawling, and 6 legged tiger like creatures with crab claws. also everything in the island is extr emely hostile, for example they try to collect species in a net to study, when they bring the net in after a minute almost nothing inside was still alive.

I'me reading the Necronomicon, an HP Lovecraft compilation, but I have to say. As much as I love his ideas and mythos, I can't stand his writing. It seriously puts me to sleep

Last realy good book I read was Radio Free Albemuth by Philip K Dick. Holy (please do not swear) is that book awesome!!!

I'm a big Hunter S. Thompson fan (this was the guy that re-invented journalism, and the movement he led brought down President Nixon.
I am reading his "The Rum Diary", a fictional story that gives a real insight into how he himself 'opened his eyes' to what journalism could be.
I don't recommend it as a first Thompson book to read ("The Great Shark Hunt" for his journalist articles, or "Fear Ana Loathing In Las Vegas" for fiction), but very insightful if you're already a fan of his.

If you are a gamer and haven't read the Lord of the Rings then you should feel bad. Seriously, start feeling bad for yourself right now. I'll wait.





Okay, now that that's over with I just finished reading "No Easy Day" last week. It wasn't bad, and no nearly the security violation that it was made out to be. It reads much like "In the Compay of Heros", not that many of you have read that one either.

I'm currently reading "The Fighting Tanks". It's kind of dry, but what do you expect from a book full of technical specks from World War I. After that I'll probably read "The Defence of Britain."




Oh, and if you're a nerd/geek that hasn't read the Hitchhiker's "Trilogy" you should feel bad too. I'll let you know when you can stop.

I just finished "A Dance With Dragons" (been reading them since he first released them)... boy has it been a long ride between books.

Back to "Tales of Heresy" or Terry Goodkinds "The Omen Machine"

Last exit to Brooklyn, Battle Royal- Not the most amazing style of written, battle royal does get a tiny bit lost in translation, but the action is awesome and if you go really deep you can find some meaning.

Great Gatsby- Possibly one of the best books ever written, Fitzgerald is a incredible writer and the plot is so so deep.

just a thought does anyone lese re-read books that they really liked here or is it just me? I know I have a shelf of 40k novels, each one has been red at least 3 times.

Depends on the author/book.

Half of my Terry Pratchett paperbacks are just tatters, or have been replaced due to wear - it's easy reading with subtle ... subsomthings ... you don't necessarily pick up on first time around. My 2nd hardback copy of LotR is still in good shape as I treat it with reverance but have been read two or three times every year for the last 15 years or so (the first copy got knocked off the shelf by someone and broke it's back - I gave it away to someone else and bought a new one). RR Martin/aSoIaF is somewhere in betweeen those.

Stephen King's, and similar authors', books gets read once and forgotten. Kafka's Das Schloss and Der Prozess have also been read just once, because I'm loathe read them again. Not because they aren't good, they are and everyone ought to read them once, but they, well, they're Kafka books. If you've read them you probably know what I mean.
