So today my buddy and I played another 2000 point game. It was a very dense table with 16 pieces of terrain, and a river bisecting the table in the center across the short section.
I skimmed my friends Grey Knight list, Drago Wing? Supposed to be really good. I like a challenge.
I ran my usual list of Lots of Fliers and Monsterous creatures, and a couple of deep striking units.
Game was Purge the Alien / Hammer & Anvil. I deploy first. I take the more terrain heavy side for cover.
My Tactic: My opponent has range to hit me at range with orbital bombardments from a Techmarine, and a psyrifleman dread in range inside a reinforced ruin. I opt to run the board length and go for a tabling.
Turns 1&2 involve me weathering some fire, taking random wounds when moving through terrain, and lots of running. Losses are light, but my opponent stayed on his table side behind cover. I bait my opponent out of cover on turn 2 to go after first blood.
Turn 3. This will be the deciding round! Everything is going to plan. I soften up my opponent with shooting and then on to the assault.
* I send in a Flyrant with +3 Tough/Str from Iron arm, 12 Gargoyles, 3 Shrikes.
* I send a Crush-it-Gone +2 Tough/Str from Iron arm, and 2 Carnifex into another unit, with A Broodlord, Tyranid Prime with twin-boneswords, and my sole remaing Genestealer failing their charge roll to join in.
* I have a Trygon, and Harpy that is within range of either group to push the assaults over the edge if the Assaults need some help.
Ahhh, yes. I have this. There's too many wound for my opponent to go through. Lots of HoW attacks The win will be mine. I start with the flyrant. YES! 4 instant deaths only 4 units left in that group. All is well... wait what's that? Brotherhood banner Auto Passes ALL psychic tests? Oh, and you managed to wound my monsterous creature just once... and now you auto pass the instant death for multi-wound models. Oh and all your grey knights have auto-instant death weapons if they wound just once..... PANIC, that can't be right... no... wait... it is. =(
So I was right on turn 3 being the deciding round. I loose all my monsterous creatures I was banking on to weather 2 rounds of assault. With my Carnfexen and Tervigon getting killed before even getting an opportunity to hit. I call the game. My opponent wants to continue, but I can no longer table him, and I am 0-5 in kill points, and have just partial units left, and 2 monsterous creatures left that are only useful agains Terminator models if the assault.
Lesson Learned: Watch out for units of power weapons with brotherhood banners. Drago wing is a potent list, also know your enemy units better.
